This blog is about The Boden's Mate! It involves 2 bishops and one more piece for a sacrifice.

So...

Let's get started then!

Here's the starting position:

Can you guess the next move?

(White to move).

Great!
But why would you open up both of your rooks?
Well, the answer is down below!
Look!
You distracted the black queen all the way to h1!
Now, there is a very important square that she isn't guarding anymore!
Can you spot it?
Yep!
That's right!
The black queen isn't defending the a6 square!

Now, it's time for the queen sacrifice!

(White to move).

Why that queen sacrifice???

Well, the only legal move for black is to capture the queen with the b-pawn.

That opens up a light squared diagonal for the bishop on d3!

Now, what move is next?

Yay!

You did it!

That was The Boden's Checkmate!

Let's see it again:

I hope you enjoyed this post about The Boden's Mate!

It might just be my favorite checkmating pattern because the 2 bishops checkmate using a criss-cross shape!

Bye!
