Why Pawns Are The Best Things In The World!

Yes, I know. I haven't posted any blogs in a long time right? Well today, I'm back with another blog! Today, I'm here to tell you how pawns can save the day! To start us out, let me ask you a question. What do you think pawns are? Do you think they're just some weak and powerless little things? Well think again! Pawns are actually really important. If you didn't have any pawns, how could your king get safe? The other pieces would have to be near the king to protect him but that's not where those other pieces want to be! Those pieces want to get near the enemy king to attack! That's how pawns are so important! The pawns have the job of keeping they're own king safe.

Okay. You're not the only one who used to think that those pawns are useless. When I was just a beginner, I also had the same thought but after I played more and more games, I realized how important those guys were! Pawns take up a lot of space. If you push your pawns forward, they will be guarding a lot of squares and your opponent will be afraid to even develop their own pieces! Make sure you develop your pieces as you push your pawns! Scroll down for a tip on using your pawns!

The Snow Plow:

So... what's the snow plow and how is a snow plow related to pawns?? (It's okay if you don't know what a snow plow is in real life. We're focusing on chess). The snow plow is when you push your pawns forward! Usually the e and d-pawn. If you get your snow plow going in the opening, those pawns can kick away some of your opponent's pieces! Your opponent could be developing some knights or something but if you have the snow plow and keep it going, you will force those pieces back! You also want to develop your own pieces of course and get your king castled! Try to develop you pieces so that they're aiming at the center or defending that snow plow!

That, for white is the perfect position! Those rooks are behind the snow plow! The queen is too. If we keep moving that snow plow forward, then black's pieces would have to go back home and hide from those evil pawns that are invading their territory!

If you get all of your pieces developed when your opponent just moved pieces around, and wasted time, you're almost always in a better position! See how pawns are so awesome now?? grin.png Yep! A lot of times, the snow plow drives away the knights in the beginning because we often develop our knights first. If you want a snow plow, just keep pushing your pawns forwards! Push push push!

Knowing how to use your pawns is really important. You can't be greedy and start eating every piece you see with your pawns! Take a look at this example:

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?? That pawn was pinned to the queen! That means if we move that pawn, the queen would be in danger afterwards!! Although white got a bishop (3 points) and a knight (3 points), you're still down some material (because 3+3=6). Black got a pawn (1 point) and a queen (9 points)! 1+9=10. Black is up 4 points and captured white's queen!! grin.png White lost a queen. sad.png Now I hope white learned to think about every move before making it! White also can't be that greedy next time. If you're not really familiar with how much each piece is worth, here's a picture that might help you:

The pawn is worth 1 point, the knight and bishops are both worth 3 points each. The rook is worth 5 points and the queen is worth 9 points.

Alright guys! I hope this helped you and good luck in your own games! Push push push your pawns and get that snow plow going! Thanks for all the views! Goodbye!
