The actual date slipping by, we missed the 40th anniversary of the passing of Steve McQueen but we believe as the King of Cool and a movie icon he is still worthy of a match in his honour. He only had a total of 44 screen credits but what a mark he made. He was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for The Sand Pebbles 1966; he won two Globes as the world’s male film favourite in 1967 & 70, and was nominated also for Love with the Proper Stranger 1963, The Reivers 1969 & Papillon 1973. Other memorable roles were Never So Few 1959, The Magnificent Seven 1960, The Great Escape 1963, The Thomas Crown Affair & Bullitt 1968, Le Mans 1971, The Getaway 1972, the Towering Inferno 1974 & Tom Horn 1980. Born in Beech Grove, Indiana he did a lot of his growing up in Slater, Missouri although he had a troubled youth and spent some time in reform school at Chino, San Bernadino when living in Echo Park, Los Angeles and whilst in Greenwich Village, New York he raced motorcycles at Long Island. He credited a spell in the US Marine Corps for making him a man. On leaving the service, he studied acting in New York with Stella Adler and his breakthrough came with the TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive 1958-61. Through his major career years he lived in Brentwood, Los Angeles. He died far too young at 50, having contracted a rare form of lung cancer from exposure to asbestos and although the odds were slim he sought alternative treatments available in Rosarito Beach, Chihuahua and Juarez in Mexico where sadly he did not make it through.
