I changed my settings so you can try again. Hoping the Chess.com Version 3 settings override what I had in Version 2. I recommend that when you are playing normal games you not look at Stockfish until the game is over. Often people make moves the computer says are bad but it might take an 8-move combination to exploit it which your opponent will rarely see. When you resign you deprive your opponent of the opportunity to make a blunder of their own. :-)

Phoenyx you should probably take white since some of the time I use an iMac with a pair of processors.

I would be glad to take you on, Phoenyx. Request that you challenge me when you are ready but make it 3 days per move since I am sometimes away from the internet for a few days.

I have not played a computer-assisted game against an individual opponent with the Version 3 interface but it should be possible, when you issue the challenge to your opponent, to select whether the game is rated or unrated. If anyone has difficulty with this let me know and I will look into it.

Not sure, vishnu. This would be affected partly by the speed of the hardware but even more by the software. Some engines prune the decision tree aggressively and reach a deep search quickly and others search more moves at each level, don't get as deep as quickly but hope to make up for that by not missing anything at shallower search depths. All other things being equal going from 4 core to 10 would likely cut the search time in half at any given depth.

How lond do you think it will take a 10 core to reach depth 40 from starting position?

Let my iMac (vintage 2011, 4 cores) calculate from the starting position with Stockfish8-64. It reached 27 ply in one minute, 33 ply in 10 minutes and 37 ply at 30 minutes with a French Defense Tarrasch variation as its preferred line.

I'm on the road with just a small laptop. I'll take a look at calculation time when I get home.

1. Any position will benefit from calculating deeper than your opponent. The length of time needed to reach a particular depth depends not only on your hardware but also, heavily, on the position (number of pieces, number of possible moves, number of moves with close to the best evaluation).

2. How long does it take to reach depth 40 on the starting position on your computer? I think depth 40 is quite reliable.

1. Are there any positions which require more than depth 40 on stockfish?

The easy answer is the most powerful hardware you can afford. At WCH level you will be up against workstations and custom hardware with a number of cores and memory far beyond the usual PC. Here is a link to an article from 2014 that describes the basics: http://www.serverchess.com/hints.htm#topofpage

What sort of hardware is needed to win ICCF WCH?

We have not been very active lately due to no other teams wanting to play Vote Chess against us. From what I have seen, most Vote Chess games are heavily influenced by voters using engines so you might presume there would be plenty of competition but no challenges for a long time. I would be glad to participate in a forum or to look at ICCF games posted here for discussion.

You need to make that tournament unrated, otherwise everyone who enters it is technically cheating. Also, I doubt very much that you'll get 90 players interested in such a tournament on this site.

Chess School cancelled our Team Vote chess game, probably scared off by our use of computers. Sorry about that.
