(assume equal mass distribution in the body). If you dug to HALF the RADIUS of the body, what graviational effect would you feel on yourself? Assume equal mass distribution in the body, that the body's content wouldn't crush you etc

June 18, 2012: I joined because I read one topic and I totally enjoyed it. I have become a fan of Stephen Hawking and I have four of his books. I have viewed three of his videos. I am not a young guy compared to the Universe. I'm 74 years old. This site is one of the hardest to read because the contrast of the green back gound and the light font color. I will copy the subject or comments posted and paste it in Word to make it easy to read. I found several that were Black and Bold, and those were easier to read. I will do that. I probably will read all the new and old topics posted. I love Cosmology, Astronomy, Physics and Math. In Advance . . Thanks for posting them. Bye for now.

Not sure if any of our members were located somewhere they could catch the aurora last night. For the rest of us, the aurorawatch flikr group shows us what it was like! https://www.flickr.com/groups/aurorawatch

Just a quick bit of fun. Some easy, some hard (for me too hard) http://www.britannica.com/quiz/5/astronomy-and-space-quiz/questions

From the discussion in the group notes, I thought it would be interesting to look at all of the Wikipedia articles relating to the Britannica quiz with a view to finding ways in which they could be improved. Errors would be best, significant omissions (or irrelevant content) would be good, badly edited text would be worthwhile. For convenience, I am providing all of the links. A trophy (or trophies) will be awarded. [I have to admit that mostly, I just read this sort of article with the same degree of trust as most scientific publications. If something catches my attention, I may find other material on it and even make edits, though very few relating to astronomy] Equinox Ecliptic Solstice Hans Lippershey * Archimedes Johannes Kepler Galileo Saturn Neptune Kuiper Belt 90377 Sedna Syzygy * Photosphere Dwarf planet Orbit Spin Light year Quasar Space Age * Note that the asterisks indicate that if you had asked me who invented the telescope, I wouldn't have known, if you had asked me when the Space Age began I would (shamefully) have been a bit unclear about exactly which year and I couldn't have told you what a syzygy was (although in 2012 I took a snapshot of what might at a stretch be called one), but I still managed to get those three questions right. Venus, Jupiter and the Moon, August 11 2012 (click and look carefully to see Jupiter, nearer the Moon and above the line to Venus).

Einstein said that only an incapable mind perceives time as having a present, past and future. A capable mind will realise that technically the present, past and future are the same thing. It is like different places on the same price of string. Imagine time as a straight line, and you can only travel forwards, then time is finite, and you can't go backwards. But, imagine it as a loop: if you go forwards enough, you go into the past and time is infinite. I have a theory that time is infinite, and therefore, history repeats itself.

Google it, and read about it. I can't cut and paste with this damn browser, or I would post it.

Hi all, I'm sure you all know about the neutrinos travelling 20 parts per million faster than light at CERN . What are your thoughts ? Have CERN made a mistake ? A breakthrough ? If the reports are correct , then what can mankind gain from this knowledge ?
Since 2004 it has been speculated that the form of Universe might be dodecahedral or even hyperdodecahedral in 4 dimensions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nk7SIPljkH0 http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/18368 Now there are new theories that the Universe might be Brane (Membrane), in a multidimensional space. http://www.whillyard.com/science-pages/steinhart-turok.html Earlier the Hypothesis was that the Universe might be Torus, which ,ight bemost adequate for Big Bang theory since no centre from where the galaxies and stars are spreading has been ever obsserved. http://vortexspace.org/display/glossary/Torus+Geometry Maybe it would be interesting to summarise all observable moving vectors of galaxies and try to identify if there is any preferible direction. I know that some analysis have been done and that it seems that the (observable) Universe is actualy egg shaped and not spheric at all. Which theory do you prefer, and are there other hypothesis?
