I thought I should post one of my many losses. This position is just before white's final move that forced me to resign. See if you can find that move:

Have you ever been playing a game where the material is equal on both sides, but you feel like you're losing? It's probably because your opponent has the initiative. How about a game where your attack was so strong that you didn't realize that you were actually down in material until after you won the game? You probably had the initiative. The importance of initiative in chess cannot be overstated. It affects every phase of a chess game. I would like for the higher rated players to answer this important question. Please post some instructive positions and explanations. No need to be super-fancy. Beginners and intermediate player should post questions about initiative here. I think that many will learn that sometimes initiative is worth a pawn, or even sometimes worth a full piece.

Why Chess not in the Media like Poker or the Spelling Bee
I'm sure by now we have all heard the principle 'Don't move your queen too early in the opening!' This is sound advice, because your queen could become a good target for your opponent allowing him or her to develop with tempo. I'm sure that many of you have avoided early disaster by following this simple principle. I agree with the adage, however after years of playing I would modify the wording a little. Today, I would say something like this: In the opening, consider well the square on which you wish to move your queen. Can my queen be attacked on that square? If so, how can I respond? I have come to this place because of the numerous games I've seen where either my opponent or I have played an early queen move, and the result of the game was favorable. Recently, I finished a team match in which an early queen move by me proved to be very disruptive to my opponent. Here's the match: http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=21497116 In another game I played against the late Nakamura_Fan , my opponent beat me pretty handily after moving his queen on the 2nd move. Here's that match: http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=21702594 I'd like to hear the group's thoughts on the subject of early queen moves. There are probably thousands of examples out there.

I like to look up a lot of classical chess matches, and every then and now I run across some that are quite instructive. I can't say that I have a favorite one, because my reasons for looking at old games varies. Sometimes I'm looking for aggressive opening play (Morphy, Diemer, Tal), while other times I'm looking for solid positional/defensive play (Steinitz, Petrosian, Capablanca). Perhaps to my detriment, I prefer studying old games as opposed to studying chess books. Give me a collection of games (especially with commentary from the players) anyday! Have you run across any old games that you found to be instructive? If so, then post a link to that match here with a brief description of what you learned. Can't post a link? Don't know where to find old games? No problem. Just post the game itself using the 'insert position or game' icon being sure to give credit where credit is due. I'm looking forward to this running forum. Hopefully we can get as much participation in this one as we get in the others.

Firstly in this game I played white and as an avid benko gambit player I decided to steer the game towards the b6 line of the benko gambit. but in this case reversed. All gambiteers will tell you three things... That the benko gambit is one heavily positional gambit with plenty of chances for fireworks in the game majority of the endgames in the benko are actually playable by the benko gambiteer even when a pawn down due to heavy pressure along the a and b files Never allow white to play the reversed benko. with tempo, the gambited pawn does not really register as lost material for white.the game is heavily annotated so please check out the move list for variations.ok now for the game.
