Divisions this year were a great idea to spark rivalry and make each game count, but I think their implementation could be tweaked. The first problem with the divisions was the unfairness and uncertainty in the seedings. We have seen many underdog teams who were seeded low sweep through their respective divisions. This causes a big problem within the division. The second problem is the lack of motivation towards the end of the season. We see many teams who have clinched a playoff birth by week 3 and won the division by week 4. Once a team has won their division the remaining games are somewhat dull. Lastly there is not a big enough reward for doing really well in the playoffs. Wether you went 6-0 or qualified at 3-3 you still have the same schedule. Although the tiebreak during the first round is great the odds you will have to use it are slim.
My solution to solving both of these problems is to first switch the order of the schedule. Play your out of division matches first and you division matches last. The out of division match pairings would be based off of admin power ranking like this year. The twist is the divisions would be formed after week 3. Ideally a division would include a 3-0, 2-1,1-2, and 0-3 team. With the help of division point tiebreaks every match would feel crucial towards the end of the year. To make the playoffs more exciting and reward great regular season performances we could adopt the NFL's structure of the playoffs. The top 4 teams get a first round bye, the other 4 division winners are automatically in the playoffs, and the next best 4 teams (by leaderboard) are in. Teams are seeded by admins based off of: record, schedule strength, and quality wins (kind of like college football playoffs.) The top 4 teams get tiebreak odds against the wildcard round winners.
Let me know if you like this idea. Our current system really isn't that bad, but I think this could lead more balanced schedules and pressure towards the end of the season.
