How popular is chess in Newfoundland today? I remember chess in the late 80s being somewhat active. Who would be the top players of today and yesterday from Newfounland?

Hey everybody, Just wondering if there's anyone from the Corner Brook area that's up for a match. Adam

Does any other player stick to one opening or do you experiment with different ones? What one do you find the best for your playing style?
Was wondering if anyone has heard of "Endgame" a 2011 tv series that lasted 1 season with Newfoundlander Shawn Doyle as a Russian chess master who solves crimes. http://www.thetelegram.com/Arts%20-%20Life/Entertainment/2011-03-10/article-2318329/A-Newfoundlander-in-a-Russian-chess-masters-skin/1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-gcNz-5ilo&feature=related
Hey guys, It was mentioned to me that we could have a closed Group only tournament if people were interested. If you're interested in this sort of friendly tournament, please post here to let me know and I'll keep a list of who has expressed interest. Once we get enough, we could create a tournament or just do single elimination matches between players, depending on what people prefer. Anthony

If you are not home sick yet you will be. Take a look at one of the ads that the province have out promoting Newfoundland and labrador. http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/AboutThisPlace/Videos/2A278340CD74103F
Hi guys, as you may know, recently Jen has transferred the leadership of the team to me. I had a few questions for those of you who are still active, so I can better manage the team. 1) Do we have enough team matches going right now? Would any of you like some more? I haven't played in the recent ones but I can now that my game count has gone down. 2) How would you guys feel about creating a "study" thread in the forums? I think this would be a good way to get more activity going. We could post our own games, get analysis from others, post useful learning resources etc. This could motivate the team a bit more I think but it won't work if others aren't interested. I have loads of free time that I can dedicate to this group so if you have any ideas, feel free to bring them forward! Anthony
I brought up the idea of making this thread earlier, so here it is! Post some of your games, discuss openings and endgames, share a neat game you found, or anything else of that nature. The topic i'd like to bring up first is endgames. The old King and pawn vs King win was one of the first things I learned, from the program Chessmaster, but I don't know how prevalent knowledge like that is with the rest of the team. I recently finished reading Silman's Complete Endgame Mastery course and I can say I've learned a lot from it. Anyone who's looking for a book on the subject should get it.

All I needed was a draw to win the match. I had White. I played perfectly for the draw... until move 18 when I played a real stinker lol

So it's about time this Newfie (that'd be I) showed the world just how well we Newfies can play
