Hi to whoever reading this. Recently i have been considering getting a FIDE rating, but i am not sure about how it works. Im 15 and have peaked 2017 rapid on chess.com (currently 1968 or smth). 1) at what FIDE rating do i will initially get placed on? Or do i have to play otb games to determine my elo? If so, how does that work? 2) What is a good way to find tournaments worth my time? I mean like actual tournaments instead of casual ones 3) what rating does 2000 chess.com translate to Fide? An estimation from a player with FIDE rating is much appreciated  Thanks in advance for answering

Hi, are there some places in HK where Chess players go if they want to play in person ? I am not thinking of a club, more like some place for casual chess playing. I have found some places for Chinese chess of course but not for western chess.

In your opinion, what is the optimal/best/easiest/most efficient/most effective way to communicate, express, and learn Cantonese? I learned basic Cantonese by attending Saturday school in my country, and by communicating with my parents, both of whom are Hong Kongers.  I also watched some HK cinema from the 80s and 90s, with Stephen Chow body of work lending to many laughs and good times.  After years of frozen or slow progress with Cantonese, I updated to the Pleco app which I have found to be an invaluable resource for mobile. For Personal computer, I have experimented with my preferred CangJie and know of NJStar and some Windows keyboards/whiteboard inputs.   Most of us also know that Cantonese idioms are also effective and efficient at expressing concepts with brevity; any ideas on how to learn more about such sayings, or any kindle books or websites that are must-haves/visits for Cantonese? Sincerely from the other side of the world,  道正

Are there still OTB chess being played in Hong Kong like weekly in a chess club? I can't find much info online, and none of the unis have active chess clubs unfortunately. I think there were weekly meetups in Kowloon Bay station a few months ago, is that still a thing? Preferably it'd be free. Much thanks for any response

Hi all, I'm Luke Lau. I think many of you should know me already, I'm currently the No.1 player in HK (https://ratings.fide.com/) and 2022 HK champion. I'm currently residing in the UK, so unfortunately I haven't been able to play in HK tournaments lately, but right now I'm looking to coach some students online. My FIDE rating is 2142 (as of October 2023) https://ratings.fide.com/profile/6002226, and I am 2500+ in chess.com blitz and bullet. I have higher education background in psychology and cognitive neuroscience. I have represented HK in many high-level tournaments on an international stage, including the 2016 and 2022 World Chess Olympiads, 2016 Asian Continental Championship, 2015 Asian Cities Chess Championship, 2013 World Youth Chess Olympiad (U16) and others. Within HK, I was the 2022 HK Champion (as mentioned above) and the 2016 HK Vice-Champion and winner of the HK Junior (U18) Championship in 2012 and 2014. I also won many other tournaments in HK, across standard, rapid and blitz time controls. Some of my other qualifications and achievements can be viewed on my profile https://www.chess.com/member/ll220284ll. Please send me a message if you have any inquiries .
