Guard can actually be used quite effectively, especially in the endgame. I don't think most other players would want to replace it, as it provides a sort of stability to the already more complicated game.

The hunter seems to be a good compromise. A faster piece in terms of development and not as strong as the pieces i mentioned earlier.
I like the hunter, I just don't see the guard being replaced as a main piece anytime soon
