New adventurer

Hello! I'm here because I'm interested in playing and simultaneously learning to play D&D. I'm new to D&D, extremely new, so I have no experience in how this game is played at all!

Is this still alive anyways?

David

To be honest, this particular forum has been a little quiet - the five of us who were interested in actually playing D&D started a separate club to hold all of the details of the adventure itself in https://www.chess.com/club/the-quest

@regi-mental is our Dungeon Master or "DM", and it's actually still very early in the adventure - in summary, the town we're in has been attacked by cultists and their dragon, and we've been going back and forth helping where we can, so it'd be pretty easy to add another character into the mix: he'll probably see this post, but you can drop him a PM as well.

Have you had any experience with any role playing games? One thing to note is that D&D probably isn't really a cinematic experience: if one of the heroes tries something heroic but foolish in a movie, often it's a spectacular success, whereas in a D&D game, it's much more likely to just get you killed...

It would be great to have you join us. It has been fun.

@Caedral

I have quite a bit of experience with roleplaying games actually, but mostly improv. I'm cool with the non-cinematic part. Thank you.

Wow, that's super interesting! I'm not sure that D&D is a roleplaying game of the improv type - there's certainly stories and characters, but a fair chunk of it is about the numbers, especially with combat, as it has its roots in historical battle miniature re-enactments - in that regard it's more like a simulation. The rules in this particular edition are more streamlined, logical and cohesive than the famously capricious sort of rules of the original "Advanced" edition, but there's still a lot of them - http://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/10366/where-is-dd-in-the-spectrum-of-rpgs summarises some of the key points nicely.

By all means give it a go, but if it starts feeling more like accounting to you than a game, it's important to communicate that with the DM (and the rest of us) and see what adjustments we can make to make it more enjoyable for everyone all round.

we are very close to our first "milestone" where our group will level up.  This will be the perfect place to add to the party.

one or two new adventurers would be great

Looking forward to another player. Maybe you will be another dwarf to join Blunder. I keep running into a fight and end up being at the bottom of the dog pile of dead bodies. What fun!

Sorry, forgot about this. So, how do I make a character, where is the actually game taking place, and what do I need to play?

Join the club https://www.chess.com/club/the-quest - @regi-mental will probably need to approve before you can see any of the content.

Catch up the early part of the main story thread at https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/the-quest - maybe the first 4 pages.

To create a D&D character, check out http://www.wasd20.net/dd-character-creation/ - our DM might have some additional links.

My tip is to pick a character you'd like to play, rather than one that tries to fill a niche - you'll relate better to them that way and hopefully have more fun!

regi-mental

Let's figure out what type of character you'd like to play first.  Then we can all help you build it.  I have a fun way to introduce you into the story, but fist, let's figure out who you'll be.

so,

a sword swinging warrior?  a bookwormish wizard?  a evil battling priest?

there are weapons, armours and magics to learn about, or a mix.

a human? a halfling? a goliath?

do you have a feel for the "archetype" that interests you?

ComicalMayhem

Question: What version rulebook are you guys using?

regi-mental

the new one.  5th edition

regi-mental

maybe a character based on your avatar?

halfling warlock?

scott715

I was thinking more like a jester, oh wait that is not a class. Can it a lawful good vampire? Oops not allowed again.

David

For reference, the current party is:

  • half orc barbarian
  • gnome cleric
  • dwarf rogue
  • half elf monk who will multiclass into sorcerer if we don't get another magic user on board...

My request to join The Quest still hasn't been accepted. Is it normal to wait a few days?

SansTheComic1145

I like improve roleplays better than all this "class" and "You rolled a..." stuff. anyone up to a roleplay on my roleplay forum? @ComicalMayhem? @Joker-rev? Anyone?

Joker-rev

I'll bail out this one. maybe in the future i'll play. Thanks anyhow.
