New web notifications (take two)

Hi Beta Users!

We would like to inform you that tomorrow at 11am CET (3am PDT) we will be launching a new web notification system. We hope that things will go much smoother this time. 🤞

Please report issues such as:

1. you are suddenly not getting notifications you are expecting
2. notification you received recently is missing
3. not being able to dismiss some recent notification
4. broken appearance of some notification

Also, let us know, but don't be angry if:

1. you are missing some very old notification - the new system was designed to auto-delete all the notifications older than 90 days
2. some old notification is back - you can dismiss them manually, or let the system clean them up for you, as every notification older than 90 days is subject to auto-deletion

The goal of this is not to annoy you, but to make the user experience on this site better. Client-facing part of the old web notifications (aka alerts) may work and look good, but their legacy implementation create a lot of problems on the server side in terms of scaling and maintenance. Rewrite of the entire system was desperately needed, it was a complex project that we worked on for several months, now it's time to release it. In order to do it gracefully and to avoiding problems with unforeseen bugs, we are releasing it gradually. We first did it for our staff, the next step is Beta users.

Please be aware that your current (old) notifications will remain intact as they continue to be stored in parallel with the new system. You can switch back to the old notifications by leaving Beta or us switching off new notifications feature if we realize there are some major malfunctions.

You may notice significant increase in number of notifications: https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/notifications-flock?page=1&newCommentCount=1#comment-47153836.

More specifically, club activity notifications (forum topics, news). It's because previous system wasn't showing the actual number of notifications there are, but was limiting club activity notifications to 20. So even if there were 50 events, you would still be notified about only 20 newest.

New system simply notifies you about every event, even if there's a burst of 20+ forum topics or news.

If this annoys you, we can consider changing the behavior to how it was before.

I hope this is a one time thing (since it just got implemented now) since I've gotten notifications from clubs I've previously been in and in which I currently am not and was not in earlier

Yep, it is. Problem is that you got those notifications but you didn't get to acknowledge them because system wasn't showing them to you. You are not getting notifications from clubs you are not member of.

By the way, regardless of this switch to the new system, how many unread notifications you have on average and how long do you keep them? I'm noticing that some people have 100+ unread notifications, how do you manage those? Just wondering.

I try to check them all but due to internet problems lately I had like 50ish unread notifications but when right when I started checking those, due to the implementation of the new system, unread notifications shot up to 110

Is the increase primarily in the "Club Activity" section (forums, news)?

Yes, club forums and club notes

Sorry for that inconvenience, it is a consequence of what I've described in previous comment. You can clear them manually but we'll try to solve the problem by somehow clearing some of those notifications that are no longer valid.

I am receiving notifications from all the clubs that have banned me.

I have a similar problem, most of them are from clubs I left a long time ago.

I assume this is because when you ban someone they are included in your club’s membership register in turn making them receive your club’s activity notifications.

Those are some old notifications or you are still receiving them, let's say 30 minutes ago?

That's the same problem edr0nt mentioned. Those are notifications that haven't been displayed to you while being the member. Going forward, you won't be getting notifications from clubs you are not a member of.

When I logged in this morning there was an abnormally large number of notifications, new forum comments. On closer inspection it transpires they are clubs that have banned me. I then cleared the notifications but new ones arrived. I cannot access the forums because I am banned so there is no way for me to date the comments.
