Famous Christian shrines: the Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Cracow, Poland

The Divine Mercy Sanctuary (in Polish: Sanktuarium Miłosierdzia Bożego) in Kraków-Łagiewniki (nowadays a district of the city of Cracow) is situated in the buildings of monastery of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, founded in 1891. In the period between world wars in this Monastery Saint M. Faustina Kowalska, was living, and she died there in 1938. Saint Faustina, known as "Apostle of Divine Mercy", received had the grace of revelations from Christ, and she described all them in her diaries. They tell about the gift of Divine Mercy given by God to the Church and to the whole world, calls to put trust in God and have merciful attitude towards neighbors and also to proclaim and pray for Divine Mercy for whole world through practicing new forms of worship (the Divine Mercy Image, the Divine Mercy Sunday, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the Hour of Mercy). The shrine is also strongly connected with Saint Pope John Paul II. Being himself very moved by Sr. Faustina's revelations, he supported the origins of the shrine still as Archbishop of Cracow, and Cardinal. After becoming the Pope, he beatified Sr. Faustina in April 1993, and canonized her on April 30th, 2000. He also visited the Shrine during his pilgrimages to Poland: in 1997 and 2002. During the second papal visit, on August 17th, 2002, he consecrated a new basilica in the shrine, and solemnly entrusted the whole world to the Divine Mercy. After John Paul II, also the next Popes visited the shrine - Pope Benedict XVI in 2006, and Pope Francis in July 2016, just before World Youth Days held that year in Cracow.
