so i want to get a wooden chess pieces set from house of Staunton but i don't know which weight is the best. my chess set is a plastic dgt pieces set with a median set weight of 0.65kg (23 ounces) but the chess sets i can choose from have a median set weight of 52 ounces (1.47kg), 42 ounces (1.2kg) or 40 ounces (1.13kg).

Like many things, weight preference is a very subjective and personal topic. Your style of play may call for heavier pieces but you might find them more cumbersome and tiring over time. Also, if a heavier piece falls it's more likely to be damaged, especially wood pieces. Just some thoughts. Good luck and let us know!

Hard to recommend weight because it's a personal preference. Over time, weights may become loose and rattle.

Have you tried weighted plastic pieces to know what your preference is?

Have you selected a style?

I’d just add this to the good suggestions already made: most of the sets at HoS are well weighted. I would concentrate on the base dimension - that determines the size square you need for a board. What’s your preferred size? A lot of sets now have a 4.4” king, which is large. And usually need a board with at least a 2.25” squares. I have come to prefer a ~2” square board, so pieces in the range of a 3.75” to 4” king.

if you are more attracted to a Staunton design, it’s easy. Soviet designs tend to be taller, but may not have larger bases.

That’s my $0.02 anyway.
