Anyone have this? Looks awesome! I just ordered one and can't wait. It's an interesting hybrid of digital and physical interface. Looks like it uses the smarts in your phone but not one of those lousy touch screen chess clock apps (i hate those... i like a real physical clock and this seems to be the best of both worlds!) Any one here tried one? I just ordered it and will report back whenever i can. It looks amazing next to those wooden sets in the video. Let me know if you've seen one in person, how well it works in bullet for example?

That will certainly stir things up in the tournament room. Let us know if the TD lets you use it.

Can they be used in a tournament setting?

There are two threads in this forum about this clock already. You may want to check them out.

@BlackKaweah @ShelbyLohrman  it's weird because the spirit of the "no phones in playing hall rule" is to prevent talking on phones, texting or getting help over text, or worse still running to the bathroom to check what stockfish suggests. Good rule! But none of those are possible when a TD docks this in airplane mode confirmed and then starts your clock. Both players and the TD can see it (vs hiding a phone in your sock and running somewhere to cheat), and of course, it isn't really a telephone or sms device when in airplane mode. at that point it's just a clock, in safe plain sight of everyone. Arguably safer than not knowing where players phones are or if they are really in airplane mode right?

But you're probably right if a TD goes by the letter of the rule, rather than the intent of the rule. The intent of the rule makes sense, the letter of the rule was written before this product existed so who knows.  🤷🏻‍♂️

toml,

Trust me, I have talked with people at the USCF about this.  With the advent of new electronic devices and the ease of adapting a phone to pretty much any task you want...they still are against it.  The problem is with Apple phones they do not allow one program to lock out another.  Android phones are great for this.

When it all comes down to "brass tacks"...so to say, they just want there to be no chance of cheating in the playing hall.  Heck, FIDE had forfeited GM's for wearing a DIGITAL smartwatch at a board.  I even think they forfeited a Indian Women's GM or IM for wearing a digital watch if I remember right.

Heck, those who know me know that I am all for innovation in the industry.  This will be a great clock for casual play.  But since it is cell phone based there is no way this will ever be allowed in a FIDE event.  You might be able to use this in a local tournament, but a national?!?!?!?  I doubt it.

Props to Galen for getting this to market.  I had an idea for something like this years ago but my thought was a full carriage which never came to fruition.  Especially after all the cheating scandals and after talking with people at the USCF I knew my idea would never be able to get used at the main tournaments.

This will be great for someone that wants to play at home or the coffee house.  It has a small footprint and is adaptable to use with any phone.  Still working with the one they sent me to see how it handles the abuse and the rigors of bullet and blitz play.

thanks

That looks like the solution to a problem which doesn’t exist. I’d get the correct tool for the job. If I had cause to buy a clock, I’d probably go for the DGT3000. FIDE approved too. Just wait for someone to flame me. ;o)

So the  TD is expected to make sure all these clocks are docked and in airplane mode? That won't go over very well. :-)

most tournaments are already short staffed with Tournament Directors as it is.  Have a feeling the same thing that happened to the ChessNoteR is going to happen here.  The ChessNoteR has a special hologram sticker that shows it was sealed and not been tampered with.  What the CCA has said is they do not have the time or want the responsibility of having to check them.

Otherwise, this is a pretty cool product.  I like the displays and the ease of use.
