Ethical-Cheating or Chess players Cheat

wow bold message MsJean ! ?
Do you think people dont know how to cheat? If I can find it they can find it. I think 98% of players are honest . Its the few that arent. So surprising is the repeat modes.
Already in the middle ages we have examples of dubious practices by chess masters. The best known – certainly the most often quoted – are by Lucena (“Try to play after your opponent has eaten or drunk freely”)
Ruy López (“Place the board so that the sun is in your opponent’s eyes”). More recent examples include
bringing a cat to the playing site when you know your opponent is allergic to these animals (allegedly done by Alekhine), smoking cigars or, more devastatingly, threatening to smoke them (as in the famous story of Vidmar against Nimzovitsch), fidgeting, humming, even placing your pieces off-centre if you know your opponent (e.g. Meking) is obsessed by neatness, and countless similar ploys.
Did you like the big cheat machine...lol

Here is the Thread Erik posted
Erik poted on Chess.coms cheating policy
There have been a few posts lately that have come up about cheating and I want to set the record straight and give the official Chess.com position on the topic. Hopefully we can put this issue away and focus on what really matters - playing and enjoying chess without the paranoia of cheating.
What is are the rules about cheating?
You can NEVER use chess programs (Chessmaster, Fritz, etc) to analyze current ongoing games unless specifically permitted (such as a computer tournament, agreed upon unrated game, etc). The only type of computer assistance allowed is games databases for opening lines in Turn-based Correspondence-style Chess and Vote Chess. You cannot receive ANY outside assistance on Live Chess games.
In the future we may create a designation for people who want to play computer-assisted chess (called Advanced Chess, Centaur Chess, etc), but we currently do not.
How often do people cheat? How many people are cheating?
Very few people cheat. Most people are good people here to enjoy the game. If you are playing people rated under 2200 it is extremely unlikely (I would say less than 0.1%) that you are playing someone who is cheating - if they were they would be rated much higher. If you are playing someone higher rated then the chances are slightly higher, but there are only 200-300 players on the site in that category and out of those we feel that the vast majority are playing legitimate chess without computer help.
How does Chess.com detect cheating?
We won't disclose our exact methods for catching cheaters (to prevent cheaters from adapting their methods), but it involves cutting-edge technology and human judgement.
How often does Chess.com catch cheaters?
We don't make huge public statements about catching cheaters, but we close many accounts each week for cheating, including accounts for Premium Members who are cheating. We are constantly going through our top players and submitting them to our cheat detection process. When we find a cheater we close their account permanently and put a notice on their homepage. We only close accounts when we are absolutely sure of cheating.
How do I report someone I think is cheating?
If you are suspicious about somebody cheating, please use the Report Abuse link and include all relevant information. We investigate all reports.
What does Chess.com think about cheating?
We think cheating is a terrible disease in online chess in general (on all sites). We have a very strict no-cheating policy and we enforce it with maximum effect whenever we are confident we have found cheating. We feel that we are extremely effective in identifying and dealing with most cheaters.
What do we recommend that you do/think about cheating?
Forget about it! We are here to worry about the issue for you so that you can focus on enjoying chess. If you are under 2200 then you should never even think about it - it doesn't affect you. If you are a top player then you should know that we are constantly checking top players, always getting better at detection, are always responsive to your reports, and are closing accounts daily.
In general, life is too short to worry about what a very small number of people are doing. There are bad people in all areas of life and that shouldn't stop you from enjoying life. We are here deal with them so you don't have to.
The main point is,
Get out there and enjoy your chess!

Cheaters Don’t Prosper in Any Society

GREAT ARTICLE!

yes but this thread is talking about otb here.
what is OTB?
Some naughty thing you can do as an adult game.
It also represents Over The Board chess (real life chess)

i think cheaters suck and dont win in the long run and this site is cheat proof i think but i thought real chess would be harder coz in our club all mobile and so forth are band during comps

Cheating in chess is nothing new. It’s probably as old as the game itself.
The french used their cell phones....
Yeah. Philidor on line one!

...so it is made painfully obvious that cheating is "alive and well" in our sport...from novices to GMs...for whatever reasons, usually financial...
My problem with the whole affair is that the organisers of chess seem not to care...nothing concrete/substantial is really being done to prevent the cheaters from achieving their goals...and if we accept "the iceberg theory"...then, only a few are actually caught...the majority just keep on doing what they do best.
...no longer does chess have this "intelligent" tag associated with it, no longer does chess have this "gentleman's game" tag...what we have are a bunch of nerds bankrupt of values, trying to make themselves feel better...
...and the problem is bigger than we can imagine...if someone can cheat in a simple game like chess...what do you think takes place in their "real" lives? At school? At work? In their relationships? Hollywood, the Media, society, have all contributed to producing human offsprings that lack discipline, that lack patience, that lack ethics, that lack morals and values that contribute positively. What we have are a great many "beautiful" people on the outside...but they are devoid of any real value on the inside...

What does this have to do with cheating?

"oinquarki",
It used to be that chess players were thought of as being more intelligent than than the average joe, as well as chess players were thought all cut from "the gentleman clothe"...with the advent of "the engine", this is no longer so...no one needs to be intelligent to beat a GM anymore...just have access to Rybka.

What would be the fun if you win by cheating? First, you know you really did not win, even if you may have won without cheating. So you are a double looser. On the other hand, I really do not care if my opponent cheats or consults 1000 other sources. The better he or she plays the more I learn. With my rating so low, from 1200 to 1250, it is a miracle (and also a lot of trial and error, take back, and replay) that I sometimes solve any of the puzzles in training scenarios. But I sure have a lot of fun trying! Even better is when I go to public places to play 5 minute (each) games, with people much better than me, (they are everywhere) and give them a tough time. Then I come back to chess.com and study some more, just for my next public appearance. Chess is FUN!
yeap with tecnolegy getting better and wireless computers and those ipads its getting easier to cheat and probably harder to prove at the end of the day but when their caught they get banned but they can return time and time agian under a diffrent profile
