The Block Bypass Thread!

Once someone blocked me because I beat them at 1000 when I was 600. They did not play well, and they blocked me for punishing their mistakes. Why do people do this?

The site is fine, if anything blocking hundreds of people and setting ridiculously narrow rating parameters slow things down and make it inconvenient for casual users who don't give a crap to get matches.

I probably have a few hundred people actively blocked rn. Anyone who runs out the clock in an game against me rather than playing on or resigning gets insta-blocked and reported. It happens a lot more than you’d expect unfortunately.
I'm honestly sick of people whining about this. When you start a game, both you and your opponent have the right to use up all your time, wait 30 seconds before making the only legal king move, not resign when a your opponent has 2 queens, and the winning side also has the right to promote their pawns to a knight and bishop for fun if they want. I've even suggested things like "trigger moves" where the site could implement a setting to automatically play the move if it's the only legal move available, but people said that would be impractical and confusing.
First of all, no, we don’t have the right, this site literally has sportsmanship rules against that. Second, even if we did have the right, that’s the same as saying someone has the right to scream directly into your ear. You aren’t wrong, but it’s undeniably cruel and spiteful.
Third, I have no problem with people who play the game out until checkmate. I actually really appreciate them because 1) it’s more satisfying and fun to checkmate someone than for them to resign, and 2) I’m learning how to play winning endgames more effectively. It’s the people who drop a knight 30 seconds in and stall 2 1/2 minutes until they lose by timeout that I take issue with. Neither of us is having fun, neither of us are learning, and neither of us is allowed to leave either.
Even gothamchess says you do. Maybe they had to go, or thought it would auto resign when they logged off. It's not that deep. Just be patient and wait the 2 minutes. I only play blitz and bullet and I know I have to set aside the full 5 minutes just in case. You may be able to report it but that is just like calling 311 in NYC, it doesn't end up achieving anything. 90% of cheaters get away, how are they supposed to determine why someone abandoned a game. Grow up.
As usual, gotham is wrong. Go check the fair play section of the chess.com rules.
“Maybe they had to go or something” of course, they always ‘have to leave’ right when they hang a piece, isn’t it interesting how that works? Anyways, if that were the case then they’d dc and I’d win in 20 seconds by abandonment, annoying but no big deal. This doesn’t happen. They specifically keep the game tab open so that you both have to sit through the rest of their clock.
I have the time but I’m here to play chess, not waiting simulator 2023, so I just block them so I never have to match into them again.
I’m not reporting them for cheating, I’m reporting them for stalling and quitting.
Why the “grow up”? All I did was present my points in a professional manner.

You don't know why they did though. I once accidentally refreshed the page in a game I was winning, with only a few seconds left, and was still able to gain back enough increments to win with a second left. Most people don't stall or log off just for hanging one piece, even if it's a queen. Maybe they ran to the bathroom? Maybe they are 10 year olds who barely know the site works and don't even know there are rules against such. It's ridiculous to think those people are sitting thinking "damn I hung a piece I just lost let me stall as long as possible to annoy the other guy or hope he logs off to and I win". If only like 1-2% if people on here cheat how many do you think do this? Out of 5,000 games I've only encountered that maybe 10 times in 6 years? For all you know on their browser they can't find the resign button (similar to how in bughouse for the longest time I couldn't see the partner board on mobile phone until they fixed that recently).

I also just realized what it might be. Alot of times if you accidentally close the tab and reopen it, it will look like you have reconnected but in reality you are watching an offline script where the clocks are still going, but in reality your opponent has moved! I realized this after watching live GM bullet games, reopening the page, and seeing one sides clock count down to nearly 0, how could that be? They are playing like 10 moves every 5 seconds now suddenly they stop? Turns out I was really still disconnected and refreshing the page updated the position and clock times, that could be a major issue. They may not even know they are disconnected and think you are the one who didn't move yet.

++ Yeah, I completely agree, which is why I block and report the ones who do.

++ You’re lucky. In the 7000+ games I’ve played in the past two years I’ve had probably about 100 games end this way.

That's only 1 in 70. You call that a "problem"?
It’s much more common than that. The 100 I mentioned are the ones who do it instantly after losing even a minor piece, I probably have roughly 500-1000 games where people will do it as soon as they have no more drawing chances or will sit for like a minute and a half until they realize I’m not going to accept a draw and then disconnect. Suddenly that 1 in 70 gets a lot closer to 1 in 10, which is a MASSIVE problem.

I think the people with that mindset at all on this site is probably less than 1 in 70. How many people do you think take chess that seriously?

Who said 75 mph? What about 121 mph? You would get a ticket for speeding.

I have blocked people----with a chess board. Sometimes losing to a gambit engenders blind rage----rage that can only be quenched by drawing blood....
"Latvian Gambit....what kind of garbage chess is that!!!!"
Red-faced, lost in primordial rage, my opponent lunges at me, fists and feet flying.
Pieces are launched across the table as I grab the House of Staunton chess board; it is quite heavy and made of wood. One! Two! Three! In quick succession I block and parry the blows. Then, with a resounding strike to the cranial mass, the lunatic is subdued, the finely crafted board has rendered valuable service ---carved Mahogany, top quality, worth every penny spent.

Elroch finally gave me the boot in his climate change thread, so I may actually need to make use of this thread occasionally now lol.
When we play top good we're cheating. When we play too bad we're sandbagging, and when we play normally we're stalling. Enough of this already and just sit down and chill and enjoy the freaking game.
