For all we know, at least half of the fifty million accounts were created by the sight so that Chess.com could advertise their massive member count. I have also seen trolls/spammers create tons of alternate accounts in real-time so that certainly accounts for a large portion of the fifty million. Then there are members who possess more than one account without permission from support, both knowing and unknowing that it is against the role, so there is also that.

If we counted only legitimate accounts, I would estimate the member count to be half of what it is right now at twenty-five million.

true, but it's still close to 50 mil... can't say the same for some other chess websites. I'm just glad chess is getting more popular!
