Nobody says "Good Game" anymore!

Is it just me or has anybody else noticed that on v3 nobody ever has the courtesy to say (text) "good game" or even gg anymore? Is it because "focus mode" doesn't support it or is it because people are using machines (engines) and think no human interaction is necessary? If you are going to beat me anyway, at least have some sportsmanship and say thanks. Sheesh.

Meh, some people are adamant that saying "gg" as the winner is impolite because it wasn't a good game if they won, therefore they're saying it sarcastically as a taunt.

People who complain about this stuff are too tightly wound. On sites where there's an option I disable chat. I think that's the most sensible. I don't play chess to chat. If someone does chat at me though, I don't care. On to the next game.

You should just play a computer then. Chess is a social game. If you don't want human interaction why play another human? Just play a machine. Your username does say it all. In fact, I'm probably just replying to a cyborg anyway so why bother? Go update your EPROM or something.

Playing machines is actually really fun! I play almost exclusively against machines nowadays (just take a look at my games), and my rating has increased tremendously in the process.

Maybe because some people don't like to chat.  What is up with people who think that they can dictate what proper etiquette is?  I don't have to accept your rematch, and I don't have to chat with you.  Just click new game and move on.

JSLigon

Well that wasn't very nice of me.

Good game.

My opponents and I get along fine. Don't make this about me, it's you who's manufacturing a problem. Notice I mention some people consider you unforgivably rude for saying gg in the first place.

In real tournament OTB games I say thanks or good game at the end and give a handshake. When playing online, strong (adult) players usually say nothing at all. That's my experience anyway.

GuessWhoIAm

On live or online chess games, if people say 'GG' to me, I would always reply them with it as long as I notice it. I rarely say 'GG' to anyone I play with mostly because I'm pretty lazy to type it out.

On OTB games, we don't say 'GG', we just give handshakes to each other coz that's a form of saying 'GG' too, right?

urk

What's v3? And why are you so co-dependent?

WobblySquares

Communication is fine but often out of place. Especially after a single game which online is often short/fast. Then there's no deep analysis to discuss and if I won I should keep my mouth shut because more often than not it's not because of my genius play but because my opponent made bad blunders. If I lost more often than not it's not because of my opponent's genius play but because I made bad blunders.
However after a match of several games I do like to say thanks, compliment my opponent's style or question some position or so. Just a little recognition of fair play and feel good moment before we split to never meet again.

I like how version 3 has the shortcuts you can click to automatically post Good game!

Its really very simple.  Many people have the grace of a cow and simply trying to be friendly and complement someone on a game has become something to criticize.  Don't say anything and people complain.  Say something nice and people complain.  You can't win.

They're not gamers and therefore don't know what gg means or how to even take it.

chess is a social game only for patzers.

So you agree? Chess is a social game.

LouStule

Rude gamers are the same people who don't wave thanks when you let them in to traffic.

Yeah, kids probably know much better than old folks that "gg" is a common courtesy in most online games.

At least, I assume the ones that get upset about "gg" aren't familiar with it.

thegreat_patzer

ironically, I can think of other posts where people were being outraged or upset by the notion of saying "good game"

the truth is that Tournament play has always had a very different culture than online chess. and online, for many it is a game with silence.

personally I do not object to an opponent that says the pleasantries, and I will return the courtesy.

but I am imagining that if you "gg" every opponent most won't say anything, and a small minority might be upset.  particularly if the game is won by time, or decided by a huge blunder.

I also think that you would see more pleasantries if you played stronger opponents, although, surely even the strongest prefer silence.  and perhaps include there are even titled players that find a "gg" objectionable.

Piperose

I would type in the abbreviation immediately on a loss, not on a won outcome, for reasons that have been specified before.

thegreat_patzer

"Good game"  would be more honest and sincere IMHO. if it was a long positional game and not some quick blunder loss- even if YOU were the one blundering.

otherwise,   "thanks for the game" is better.

Just saying.
