I joined before Queen's Gambit was a gleam in the writer's eye

It is a story of an drug-addicted alcoholic that cares for no one but herself, eavesdrops on her opponents to get an advantage, walks away from the chessboard during play in order to be rude, insults her friends and family, steals when she thinks she can get away with it, and acts like a spoiled child throughout her self-absorbed, meaningless life.

She should have played 1.g4 against Borgov to get redemption.

I joined up here a few days after finishing the Queen's Gambit series. I played chess many years ago and this series just got me going again. I've got 2 chess sets under the Christmas tree (literally), a chess book I'm reading through and a chess app on my iPad that I'm having some fun with. I'm not much of a player but I enjoy solving puzzles and following games of the more gifted. The Queen's Gambit was one of my all time favorite Netflix series. I love seeing stories about extraordinarily talented people and how they handle their gift. To have it focused on a chess genius was icing on the cake. Everything about it was excellent: writing, dialogue, acting, photography, music, everything. Definitely will watch again.

Guilty as charged! Chess is one of those things that's been on my todo list for ever. I spent 25 years as a systems analyst before reinventing myself as a digital sculptor and vfx artist and Queen's Gambit scratched both of those itches. A reminder that here was this awesome mental gymnasium I keep hearing about, presented to me in the form of some of the lushest eye candy my new industry has ever produced. Cracking plot, script and characters, too!

So me and the wife had one of those - this'll be a cool thing to get into as a couple - conversations and now I'm locked in a brutal arms race, desperately trying to figure out how this game works to prevent my nightly emasculation by way of crushing defeat on the chessboard!

You failed to mention that she eventually conquered her demons, gave happiness to many people and found redemption. I'd say that was a pretty big omission on your part.

This show is a lie. There was never any such woman in chess history. Women play weaker chess than men. Fact. This is a fantasy show where a woman crushes men, like those shows where a skinny girl can beat up ten Navy Seals. No way.

The show never claimed to be nonfiction so it wasn't a lie. To think a woman wouldn't be able to defeat all the men is pretty sexist. Navy Seals and grand masters, apples and oranges.

You've been reported. You're a slime and a troll but I expect as much considering. You have no business being a member of this forum. We will see if the admin shares my opinion. Maybe yes, maybe no.

Interesting take, because....yeah.  It's true.  Although I would say that she cares for no one, including herself, although there is some opening up near the end.  That's why I wondered if the book might be different.  The author might go into some development near the end.

Beth Harmon as hero isn't really how that movie ought to be viewed.  I would assume that she was intended to be the female version of Bobby Fischer, complete with mental illness.  They even made the mental illness explicit by saying she was like Paul Morphy.

Joined several years before and I don't subscribe to the channel it's on.

However, I understand many extra chess sets are been given this year as Christmas gifts. Interesting to see if 10 years from now, or so, someone says that gift was their first step to becoming a GM.

Yes a and no.  In the  book, Benny was much more like Fischer, even having just published a book, entitled, "Benny Watts: My Fifty Best Games."

To the extent that Beth was an obsessed chess prodigy with abandonment issues and social behavior problems, yes she is like Fischer.

There have been shows and movies made before about chess players, but none of those received the media attention and publicity that Queen's Gambit is getting. I'm guessing the difference is that the main character is an attractive young lady and she represents female empowerment and diversity.

Not me, I joined in 2018. Anyway Joining chess.com does not mean joining chess. I literally started playing when I was 3 years old. Anyway, Queen's Gambit isn't really much about chess...... well, for the most part.

I'm sure that played a part but I think the series is so successful primarily because it's so freaking good.
