They lose interest ; they may also be stuck at ratings and feel angry/frustrated and leave.

Because they are fed up that despitehaving a massive advantage in a game the other player does not resign and decides to play the clock,, basically winning dishonorably

Closed accounts nearly always come back with a new account. And many of theses closed accounts, are members who are looking for attention .

I've had (and closed) an account here in the past. I considered playing 10 minute games was hurting my chess as I could not focus on long term strategy in such a short time control. At that point in time I had been trying to stop thinking tactically only, and playing 10 minute games did not help with that.
