If you lose, it’s polite to say gg.

If you win, especially if you win because your opponent blundered stupidly, it sounds at best perfunctory because the both of you know that it was not a good game. It can sound sarcastic.

If you win and it was a close game, gg is fine.

But do you say 'gl' at the start of the game?

I'd take "gl" as a negative thing. Since you dont need luck in chess actually. It feels like sarcasm.

I kinda hate when people do that. it may be a me issue, but it annoys me.

What minefield of perceived slights the Internet can be...

I say gg often, but most times my opponent leaves before I get a chance to.

Same thing happens to me; I usually only say GG now if I'm playing someone who I know won't leave right away(like a friend)

you need luck to get matched with an opponent who isn't having a good day!

I say good game at the start of my games and see if my opponent gets angry and plays worse.

JT2007

I say good game at the end of every game no matter the result

Because somewhere along the way it was considered "rude", "mocking", "distracting", or choose any other negative thing you can think of.  Just keep in mind that the only place its considered a negative is online.  So take it for what it is worth.

There was an active thread for several years that began with the notion that people took offense at the expression "gg". Maybe someone can find it in the archive before this one becomes the same thing.

I've never said good game . . .

You shouldn't say it, if it was a bad game for the opponent.

I've always said "Thanks for the game."

They might respond "You're welcome."

and I've made some friends even if i cleaned their clock . . .

Try it yourself! . . .
