If you win, especially if you win because your opponent blundered stupidly, it sounds at best perfunctory because the both of you know that it was not a good game. It can sound sarcastic.
If you win and it was a close game, gg is fine.
But do you say 'gl' at the start of the game?
I'd take "gl" as a negative thing. Since you dont need luck in chess actually. It feels like sarcasm.

I kinda hate when people do that. it may be a me issue, but it annoys me.
What minefield of perceived slights the Internet can be...
I say gg often, but most times my opponent leaves before I get a chance to.
Same thing happens to me; I usually only say GG now if I'm playing someone who I know won't leave right away(like a friend)
And here we see the physics of the snowflake.

you need luck to get matched with an opponent who isn't having a good day!
Because somewhere along the way it was considered "rude", "mocking", "distracting", or choose any other negative thing you can think of. Just keep in mind that the only place its considered a negative is online. So take it for what it is worth.
All of these threads aboit what other people do not do can be summed up with this....
Why aren't people like me?
idk why but this made me laugh
