5 Dubrovnik Sets Comparison

I really like this version, and the purpleheart ! what a strange and beautiful wood, I wonder if it's the same as amaranth. it would be nice to know how many versions of this design exist because every time I see different ones. My favorite so far is the antiqued version of SC.

TheOneCalledMichael

SC makes one of the best repro I agree. I whish they would make in different woods combo.

Purpleheart wood is the reason why I chose this version, it's something different and I like that. I hope the gilded coating wears off quickly so I can see the grain.

Guess you could always paint it purple ! or wear tinted sun glasses , or sent more time in Amsterdam ?wink.png

Long story, but I ended up with another version of HoS Dubrovnik, in Blood Rosewood (African Padauk).

Blood Rosewood compared to Purpleheart Gilded

You are in love with this set man!. these two woods are completely beautiful!, in the case of the purple heart, it does not have a deep figured grain so you might not see it to much,

I love the Padauk one as well.  I'm fairly certain HoS Gilded lines is just their way of saying stained? So although they are beautifully stained boxwood just doesn't usually have as interesting and nice grain as the woods they mimic.

What's interesting about wood types and the Dubrovnik sets is that I don't think I've seen someone post an ebony set. Funny enough it would be a little weird to see a Dubrovnik in Ebony.

I do love those two woods indeed, in particular the deep red with the grain showing is just beautiful. I wish the purpleheart would show more grain but I guess the gilded finish is indeed covering that up. Hopefully in time with enough play it will wear off and reveal the grain.

I think the use of exotic colorful woods are making the pieces more interesting then the usual ebony or ebonized boxwood. I have to give HoS credit for offering the Dubrovnik design in so many woods variations, there is another version that is also intriguing, the tasmanian blackwood. I hope someone here has it and post some pictures of it.

Edit: @K, ah I see what you said about stained part now. The description can indeed interpreted that way yes. I interpreted it as it's purpleheart wood with gilded finish. I want to know this, I'll ask HoS what type of wood this is.

Edit 2: I just reread the description once again, they're talking about boxwood giving the appearance of purpleheart indeed....aarrrggghhh... wish it was purpleheart but it's okay, I like the purple color anyway happy.png

One of the sets in the OP is Tasmanian Blackwood from HoS.

TheOneCalledMichael

Ah right! I knew that and already forgot who posted that!

Hello fellow chess equipment enthusiast.. Fluxblunders and I both live in NYC and we periodically get together to play some OTB games. The last time I went and brought with me my 1950s Staunton Castle Dubrovnik. We decided to photograph the sets next to each other so that fellow enthusiast can make a better informed decision as to which set they personally prefer to buy.

The board is a Drueke 2.25" and all sets are 3.75". 5 sets are as follows: Staunton Castle 1950 boxwood and mahogany stained boxwood, NOJ  Minceta maple and brown stained maple, HoS boxwood and Tasmanian blackwood (older version), CB 2.0 boxwood and sheesham, CB 3.0 boxwood and sheesham.

Maybe it’s me but I can’t tell which sets are from which vendor. Could you edit the pics with a label to show the source of each set?

KineticPawn

@Westsailor32 , that you for the tip.  I have edited the OP to more easily distinguish the sets.

Nice sets. Unfortunately, Dubrovnik is a set where the reproduction will never be better than the original. I took some images to the carving master, I wont to make 100% acurate copy but he said that it is impossible to reproduce.

There are a few iterations of this design that I really like. They are not 100% accurate reproductions but they're good enough for me happy.png

No I haven't had that fortune, I wish!

It makes me wonder though why he said he couldn't do it. If he got the skill then with trial and error he should be able to replicate it. I have the feeling the cost to do that doesn't outweight the profit so that's why he said it's impossible.

I like the NOJ set the most. But I'm sure the others are great for the play as well. I will try to find some pictures that I carried with me to the carving master and I will post them here.

Waiting anxiously for the pictures....

Those are beautiful knights and so full of details! Do you know who the master carver was who carved this? But this isn't the original right? Is this the 1970 redesign model?

Edit: meant 1960

TheOneCalledMichael

Makes me wonder how the full set looks.like. I bet it has wonderful history behind it.

Excellent carving, nice design, beautiful work with no doubt. In my opinion not the best dubrovnik knight design but nice to see diferent designs. Thanks for the pictures.

Analog_Player

What is the best dubrovnik knight by Your opinion? Can You post some images? I am curious because I research dubrovnik chess sets for 5 years now and I find this one best.

jacmater

Well, I don't actually own any, I judged the pieces thanks to the pictures that people post on this forum and the one I like more is the Statunton Castle antiqued set (apart, of course, of the original set). I am currently doing my own set and I have based it on the SC one, tomorrow I will post some photos.
