Thanks, Eyechess! That is a very nice set, indeed, but for me, the knights are too big in relation to the Queen. The white pieces are too white. And the bishops don't have the scooped out mitres. This set looks almost perfect for me--it's got all the features that I like, and the price is very reasonable--but Staunton Castle has been ignoring me. They have let two messages of mine sent through eBay go unanswered for more than a week, and they've ignored an email I sent them through their website, too. As a result, Cool Chess Canada is going to be the recipient of some of my hard-earned money tomorrow, and Staunton Castle won't be. (But it's a board I'm buying from CCC.) There are only two problems I have with the SC set: the King base is a little larger than 1.5", and the kings have tops that are a little more rounded than I would like. That said, neither of these are deal killers. The lack of communication, however, most certainly is.
The problem with the above set (if there is one) is that the knights kind of remind me of the knights in this set, which I own. With the notable exception of the knights, the pieces all look better in real life than they do in the photograph! The kings are gorgeous and dignified, and the bishops have the scooped out mitres. The knights look fine if I hold them up to the level of my eye, but as soon as I put them on the chessboard, they look incredibly ugly. I complained to CB, and they very kindly sent me two free replacement knights for each colour. The problem was that the new knights were hardly an improvement on the old ones. (I should also say that I wish this set had been covered with felt--it would have made a huge difference to its playability).
I think you should wait and save up some money while spending some time searching for a vintage Jaques chess set, as your requirements sounds awfully similar to an antique Jaques set I purchased recently. Although you'd have to be happy with small chips, cracks to ebony bases, small amounts of restoration etc.
There are so many gorgeous boards out there with 2" squares...but so few sets with Kings with 1.5" diameter bases to go with them! This is just cruel.
My ideal set is a Jaques-style set with a King that is 3.5" tall with a 1.5" diameter. The King would have a small, delicate cross, rather than a big thick one, and have a top that is not over-rounded. The King and Queen should be slender, and "blob" out only at the bottom of their bases. Crucially, the knights should NOT be nearly as big as the Queen! The Bishops should have gorgeously-scooped out mitres. Elegant pawns like the HOS Player's series are nice. Rooks are rooks. I don't care for antique finish, and the white pieces should not be over-white (boxwood is good). All pieces should be covered with felt bottoms. "Ebony" or ebonized-boxwood. And the price should be just right: under $250 USD.
