A typical problem for a chess collector? Plus a problem related to four cats!

I heard some days  ago that I have to move from my apartment in 3 or 4 years. I still don’t know if definitely or only for a couple of months.

This is a problem. I have a lot of books (chess books also, but mostly scientific books on primatology, human evolution, history of science, evolutionary biology.) Perhaps 8 k books, probably more. I will only get rid of the books when I have finished some ongoing projects, but not before 4 years.

Now I have to make some decisions about the things I collected in the last 2 decades. Chess sets, boards, clocks, some chess computers (like a working Novag Adversary), and other things. My collection is mixed. I have some really cool and rare things, but the biggest part of the collection is something that you can buy for 150 dollars or less.

Because I have so many books I can’t display the collection in my apartment. Actually right now I have 4 cats which would love to play with chess pieces, so I don’t have anything displayed right now (not true - I have an old and heavy chess clock in the living room), but that’s it).

From a logical perspective I should sell the biggest part of my collection, as I don’t “need” it - it is “just” a hobby. On the other had I have a dream - be able to display part of the collection in the apartment. I simply cannot decide what to do. I love my collection but I have to decide if I want to move so many things to another apartment. I am afraid I will not have enough space for everything.

Before you tell me I should not have so many cats, it wasn’t my fault. We had “only” two cats, but a friend of us gave us her two cats to take care for a few days. However, she took her own life next day (she suffered depression since decades). We decided to keep the cats for some months, as the alternative would be to put the cats in an animal shelter, and this was out of question. Three of these cats (Somali cats are very vivid) are quite young and playful, climbing everywhere and eager to inspect everything in the apartment. They will love to play with my Solora clocks or to fight against the Novag Adversary.
Do you see the problem?

Agreed, not a great situation to be in. The good news is, you said you don't have to move for another 3 to 4 years. That should give you the time to locate a new apartment. I assume you live in Switzerland based on your flag, and admittedly I don't know what the housing market is like there, but 3 years to find a new apartment sound okay.

Your cat situation is understandable as well. We have a dog and when we moved we would pass up the "perfect" home if they didn't allow pets. No way were we going to give up our dog!

While you're looking for a new apartment, maybe start boxing up your collections in categories of "must keep," "want to keep," and "willing to part with." This way you'll be ready to sell if you must. The good thing is that you already have a community of chess players here who will probably be happy to purchase the chess materials you part with -= and you know the items you sell will be appreciated!

Good luck in your search!

I agree with @ChessAuthor. Don't decide on anything until you find a new place. Once you decide on your new home then you can figure out how much stuff you can accommodate. I also agree about the 3 boxes... keep, want to keep and maybe give away. That way you'll have some options. The worst part of dealing with an overwhelming task is when there are no options. The 3 boxes gives you this.

As for things to display, I think I mentioned I have a cat and the way I deal with my cat was to have a display case for my chess set. I always keep one chess set out in this tabletop case. The worst thing the cat can do is sleep on top of it. The display case was expensive, but it has paid for itself every time my cat jumps on my table where my chess set sits. My chess set on display has been safe each time.

Sorry, not trying to turn this into a 🐈 post but would love to see pictures of your 4 cats 😊

Thanks for the great advice! To find an apartment is not a problem,  but here I have two basements and two attics with a lot of stuff. This is actually the problem. I will not have this space in another apartment.

Thanks a lot! Yea, this is a good solution for a single set. However,  my problem is that I would like to display 20 to 30 chess items, and this is not possible right now.  Perhaps if most books are gone I will be able to display chess sets in several showcases.

Yes! Do you have cats too?

If you don’t hate the idea of selling your chess sets now is a great time to sell.

I've had cats all my life, fostering and volunteering too. I've owned Bengals and Burmese plus just ordinary moggies! I have 2 black rescue moggies both brothers. One has injury to ear and eye which means he has one eye slightly smaller than the other but is full of character. Particularly adopted 2 black cats as they are the hardest to rehome 🙂. Son loves to dress them up every Christmas and they are both very sweet and let him 😄

I guess that won't work unless you want to buy a lot of cases.

Also, I totally missed the more important point. Sorry about your friend. She must have been in a really bad place. I am sorry for you loss.

I think she had enough. The isolation through Corona didn’t make things easier.

Beautiful cats!

The young cat is extremely funny and sweet!  He always wants to be with us, jumping regularly on my shoulders (of course when I don’t see it coming). I don’t remember any cat with such a need of interaction with humans. Her former owner had tear in her eyes when she sold him to us - she also got very attached to him. With him around is almost impossible to use a physical chess board.

Yup. For most cats, their main goal in life is to knock things off a flat surface onto the floor. This is particularly bad news for those of us that own both cats and chess sets.

If I have to choose I take the cats. I had a very bad experience with a cat which was begging for attention when I was playing blitz like an addicted. She got ill and died within hours. I could not believe I ignored her! From this moment cats got my priority number one. If I am playing and a cat wants to play, I do both!
