I'm just getting back into the game.  What are the best books you have found to provide self-help for improving my game?  Keep in mind I'm just getting back

Hi Lloyd. The best book for you depends on your skill level. Have you ever studied chess before? If not, the first thing you need to study is tactics. I recommend Ward Farnsworth's Predator at the Chessboard, but there are many other books on the subject. I have been studying chess for almost three years and I still need work on my tactics. I would read Farnsworth's 700 pages, then practice tactics on Chess Tempo or a similar site, and play live games at the longest time controls you can find an opponent for.

Hi. I recommend The Mammoth Book of Chess by Graham Burgess. Its a great book that covers alot and it really helps.

Dan Heisman. Read a few of his columns on ChessCafe.com, get a book of tactics problems to go over whenever you have a couple minutes to spare (Dan Heisman recommends a few), and play a lot of slow games. After a few months of that you can think about getting books.

Dan Heisman has a recommended book list based on skill level on his web site.

One of the best books for beginners in "See Spot Run!"

Or anything by I.A. Horowitz, Fred Reinfeld or Yasser Seirawan.
