Simple Chess is a good book to get started. And I would recommend studying the Classical Games. Tal's book on the 1960 World Chess Championship is probably the greatest chess book ever written.

Simple Chess by who? Michael Stean?

I think "Simple Chess" will be too advanced for a beginner. The Seirawan books are a good recommendation IMO

It said "beginner" in the original post. I agree it's a good book though.

My favorite is Cognitive Chess

I usually meant for higher rated people, but if you set the positions up on a physical board it becomes much easier.

It uses a series of daily tasks to drastically improve calculation skills.
Hope this helps!
