Cute little set.
Best Chess Set Design Ever?

Here's a beautiful set (the Attica) that I recently picked up from Staunton Castle for only $230 US on sale.
That is indeed a beautiful set. It checks all the boxes for me. My questions are:
What is the diameter of the King base
how is the weight of the pieces? Are they single/double/triple weighted?

It may not be THE BEST chess set design ever. But it does put a smile on my face every time I look at it. King is 77mm. 37mm belly at its widest.
Penguins! ;-)

Westsailor32,
I work up a Dimension Table for each of my chess sets. Here's the Dim Table for the Attica set on a 2.375" board. Will also play nicely on a 2.5" board as well.
Have a happy holiday season! And stay save out there.
I've returned to this thread to post my thanks to loubalch for posting the Attica set to my attention. Were it not for his promotion of it, I might have passed over this set, or at the very least, taken longer to mature to it! After an exhaustive search, comparison, and consideration, I have chosen the Attica over much more expensive sets, for what I feel, is about as refined and elegant as a set can be without looking like an display piece. It looks like it wants to be played. The knight looks neither more nor less than the knight in a chess set, its just better proportioned, posed, and refined, where the 'others' (those I had initially been attracted to) seem now...over the top. Any way, thanks Lou.

tskeldon,
When I come across a great set at a fair and reasonable price I like to spread the news.
Public Service Announcement: For the benefit of any trolls or naysayers out there, I paid full price for my set and receive no benefit (cash, credit, etc.) from the sale of this or any other set from Staunton Castle.
Enjoy your Attica set. Let me know what you think after it arrives. Happy Holidays! Stay safe out there.
If anyone is interested, here's the link for info on the Attica set.
That certainly is a superb looking set.
The Public Service Announcement was "so appropriate" in lieu of what goes on here at times.Happy Holiday.

Yeah, I thought it best to cover my arse! I remember a time when posts in this forum weren't automatically meet with criticism and suspicion. Any way we can convince the haters and trolls to go back to their video games and leave us alone?

I don't know, I think it qualifies as both a playable set and a display set. Very hands on and very handsome. Rook and pawn are my 2 favorite pieces.

That Attica set is lovely... there are so many beautiful sets to choose from. In this, my first year of chess - discovered in COVID isolation - my head sees pieces in two groups for in-home play: “Display and Play” and “Robust Play”. Perhaps as I venture out of iso in 2021, I’ll add “club”, “parks and bars” and other groups or should I call them excuses to buy more sets!😉🥴 In 2021, I have a strong desire to set up a game opposite a friend in a bar with a beer or wine...
These are my thoughts in December 2020 ... I wonder how my thinking will have evolved by December 2021 and beyond? Who knows? I’ll remain open to ideas, absorb the knowledge and see where my tastes lead... cheers to you all.
I have to say lockdown life has been a bit of a drag, though I picked up 200 points in Rapid.Certainly nothing to brag about.
I got a new set two weeks ago and agree on the hard play and display thing.Damn!I have no live bodies to play, other than my 8 year old grandson, who shows real interest.
I'm his Mr.Scheibel.

Merry Christmas, everyone! (7 hours away from unwrapping my new chess set not that Christmas is all about getting new chess sets but new ones makes Christmas more fun)
I have to agree and admit, though Christmas was never celebrated in my family......
I LOVE CHRISTMAS!
This virus is really putting the kebosh on it this year! I loved going to all the stores, malls, and fun food places during this holiday and just reveling in all the decoration and not to forget.....I'd have no problem if Christmas music was played all year 'round.
Some gorgeous compositions there.
Hittin' the eggnog now...bye.

The Attica set was just too gorgeous and a deal to ignore and within my price range. I was hesitant to pull the trigger it because for me a 4" king is too large. Then loubach posted his measurement spreadsheet and saw the King is actually 4.375". Sigh...

Westsailor32,
Yes, I measured 4.375", but 1/2" of that height is the king's finial, so perceptually it plays like a 4" king (with a 3.625" queen). I have the Piatigorsky (Steiner) set from OS that also has a 4.375" king, but with a queen that's 1/2" taller.
Yes, the Knight looks like a fat dwarf from the Lord of the Ring or Hobbit movies.
