Best Hand-Held Device for Chess?

If you're serious about wanting to improve and chess is going to be a long-term hobby then I recommend buying ChessBase 13. it's around $150 I think for the software and a big database that comes with it (mine has around 6.1 million games), but it's really nice and convenient, because not only can you explore games and openings, you can create your own files with your own games, or own opening files. It helps alot.

Thank you.  I did notice also that the ChessBase website has Fritz included with it, saving a separate cost.  Once you buy a base package, aren't the updates cheaper -- for Fritz and for ChessBase?

Yes, I beleieve so. I got Fritz 11 with mine (which is pretty good engine but not top-notch). And yes, once you buy a package it becomes much cheaper to update it. :)

I picked the android ecosystem because the device is cheaper with better spec than apple. And btw this blck friday amazon selling their fire 7 inch for 35 bucks.. buy it and hack it and root it.. to make it into a normal 7 inch tablet.. i brought two jus for fun.. lol i read my chess and magagine on a samsung 8.4 pro.. i like the size 8.4 inch , 7 inch a little small for me.. but that is personal preference.. 10 inch tablet are too big to be portable.. so goto the store and see which screen size u perfer

A lot of information -- thanks.  So with an ebook pgn, you could cut and paste it and the board would set up automatically?  What would be great is if you could just scan something like a symbol in a book and the position would set itself up automatically.  I have a hard time and usually procrastinate playing through a game if it does not have enough diagrams for me to follow the moves.

Btw, a Chessbase subscription was 5 euros which came out to $5.32 per mo. or 10 times that for a whole year, with Fritz on it.

as far as i know there is no direct way to scan a chess book directly into pgn format.. scan book into pgn formate require a lot of time . ur better off jus buying the book in pgn from online its only 10 bucks. i know pdf chess book are free everywhere but the work of converting it to pgn is too much.. i would rather pay 10 or 15 from the publisher. chessbase online and pgn master both.. app capable of editing pgn files. if that is what u want. there are other free pgn/ viewer/ editor apps avail for the android but i dont use it so i cant help u on that.. u jus have to explore on your own

fritz is an outdated engine.. dont bother paying money for it.. jus use stockfish engine is free is way stronger than fritz

but reading pgn chess book helped me a lot.. i used to be a 1200 player. hehe. yeah i'm lazy also i hate reading pdf/normal paperback chess boook where i have to use a board and pieces to follow along.. currently the two top engine in the world is komodo and stockfish. komodo cost about 100 usd and stockfish is free.. i use stockfish..

Thanks again Guardian -- sounds like you got a good deal on the Androids; don't know how to "hack and root" one, but tossing around nomenclature is helping a bit.  I did get about $250 of books for this winter so I'm about at my limit for a while 'til I digest some of those.  Like the puzzle books but others like "The Chess Tactics Detection Workbook" are asking to go thru each game 2x, once for B, once for W, so that's a lot of setting up of boards.  Looks like I need a database and Stockfish and make do with this big desktop for now.
