Best Ruy Lopez Book

Hi, I'm interested in learning the Ruy Lopez opening and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations towards the best book. I'm an intermediate chess player, but I'm fairly new to the Ruy Lopez. I'm looking for a book that is somewhat beginner friendly and will explain concepts and the reasoning behind moves.

Thanks in advance Laughing

Isn't that book actually on the worral attack though(not that thats necessarily a bad thing).  I seem to remember a review of it stating this

Yes, but it's amazing and the ideas translate reasonably well to the mainline ruy.  The Move by Move book on the Ruy is also excellent.

The Ruy Lopez Main Line by Glenn Flear

Play the Lopez by Andrew Greet

I'd highly recommend Starting Out - The Ruy Lopez by John Shaw

From the book's intro:

"The book is intended as an introduction to the plans and ideas of the Ruy Lopez rather than a high level theoretical manual. I would also hope, however, that the book contains enough original analysis to be of interest to players already familiar with the basic ideas in the Lopez."

Andrew Greets book isn't bad, but you need to supplement it with a book on the open Spanish.  Don't use Greet's move order (5.Qe2?!) or you will end up having to play with a restrained center (d-pawn on d3), when Black plays 5....b5 6. Bb3 Bc5!.   I would suggest Glenn Flear's Open Ruy Lopez to supplement the Greet book.

There are some older general intros: The Ruy Lopez for the Tournament Player by Gary Lane (1992), Understanding the Spanish by Shaun Taulbut (1997),  and John Emms An Easy Guide to the Ruy Lopez (1999).

These should give you a good overview of the main variations and what to expect.

While all of these books are good, for what they cover, the Move By Move book by GM Neil McDonald would be the best of the three if one is looking for broad overview coverage of the Spanish.  McDonald is one of the best authors who does a much better than average job of actually explaining the why's and wherefore's, the plans and themes involved, for the amateur player.

Yes, but not comprehensive coverage (that would require a separate book).  Instead GM McDonald provides a 20-page overview of the Marshall Attack which includes an anti-Marshall line for White based around...

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6. 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 O-O 8.h3
