Bought a chess store closeout

Hey everyone,

We just dug out of the warehouse a chess shop buyout that featured a ton of very nice chess sets.  They are mainly Sheesham or Rosewood, but there are a smattering of bone sets stuck in there.  I am in the process of inventorying it and getting pics ready for when we sell them.

I figure with all the collectors here, maybe you can help me price these and tell me if you have seen them before.

Here is one of my favorites...a 15" Rosewood pedestal magnetic chess set.  It has separate drawers for each side of pieces.  Super strong magnets too.

Re: 15" Rosewood pedestal magnetic chess set w/2drawers

Looks like an "India Special". Something House of Chess would sell all day long. Retail price? Let's go 100 bucks on that one.

Nice haul so far love that upright set in bone. Nice details for reproduction😀
BattleDuck

Yeah, that’s a magnetic set by House of Chess.

they make pedestal ones too sell them for 99$ shipping included. They make unusually good magnetic sets, larger than that too.

The magnetic set could be pleasant time I would say $in the range of $90 to $110 would be good. The 7inch bone is in the $700 and up depending on the actual quality of the carving. They come out of Kashmir

The magnetic set is actually pretty nice.  It hard to find a storage board wit individual cut out slot for each piece.  Do you have more than 1 of these?

Pawnerai

Charge 25% lower than what House of Chess is selling it for. You're not making any money with these sets gathering dust on the warehouse shelf. Just ask the previous, out-of-business, chess store owner you bought it from!  thumbup.png

flying off the shelves. The Queen's Gambit hysteria is already very much on the wane.

I wondered how long that would take - do you have some interesting information from your interesting information sources? wink.png

I agree . That set is nice. It would have alot of appeal to some one that is in the market for a self contained set.

I'm following the Reddit (yes, I know) subreddit of TQG fans, and the contributions have taken a sharp downturn in the past couple of months. We're clearly seeing the end of the tunnel.

And it's a good thing, too: I was tiring of those endless "buy me" fanarts.

Ah, excellent.  So now we'll see how the 2021 Quality Bubble plays out.  India's current COVID problems will surely complicate things but there may be some great deals on the auction sites.  I wonder if Shelby's purchase is an artifact of the downturn?

Not really. Pleasant times/House of Chess, Chessbazaar, Chopra Chess and others, they're all selling them. These drawer-style chess sets have the disadvantage of being very heavy in relation to the size. I too would say $70-90 for such a set if you want them flying off the shelves. The Queen's Gambit hysteria is already very much on the wane.

Are you sure about that?  When I was looking I couldn't find many.  I Just checked chessbazaar and found 1 storage board but the storage does not have individual slots, just a felt lined drawer, and it is 400 bucks with crappy pieces.

Not only does house of chess sell dozens of sets with individual piece slots but, they sell folding boards separate and will cut the slots out to fit -your- chess set if you send them pictures/measurements, and since they got access to exact info on most sets made in india they have forms for them already available.

here is a chessbazaar blitz chess set in a house of chess board bought separetly, perfect fit slots including rather specific knights.

Back top the original magnetic set, I am pretty sure it is from House of Chess or one of the workshops in that area.

Here is a magnetic set in that approximate size, in rosewood. Magnetic.

Close up shot of the royal family:

Yes, magnets in this set are superb and you can play upside down.

Yes the board is shesham/golden rosewood, but that is because I prefer Higher contrast. Here is the original rosewood board:

Their 2.75 inch king magnetic sets in rosewood are 100$ free delivery in usa and europe.

3 Inch king in rosewood is 169$

and you can even get magnetic chess set in tournament size (at least in europe) 3.5 inch king for 215$

And that 2.75 inch magnetic set seems to be a perfect match (if the size is the same) to the original post - note the knights for example:

14" Golden Rosewood/Maple magnetic pedestal magnetic chess set with separate drawers from HoC. $100

Magnetic pedestal chess set

I have that HoC set and quite like it, 90-100 seems right.

Do you know what animal the bone come from to make such large pieces? I have a 19th century bone set which is much smaller and the pieces are made in sections and screwed together, because cattle bones were not big enough to make the pieces otherwise.

When I was shopping for a fancy wine opener, I noticed a lot of handles are made from camel bone.

Pawnerai,

$100 seems awfully cheap for a Solid Rosewood Magnetic.  The main ones the people overseas sell are folding boards, not a 15" solid board.  And with the quality of the magnetics on this one I am thinking in the $200-250 range at minimum.

Thanks

Shelby Lohrman

Ackk.. Yeah. I mistakenly under-priced it. Sorry about that. I was comparing your set to a Golden Rosewood (Sheesham) set that overseas sellers have in stock. Yours is solid ROSEWOOD. And looks much classier than others I've seen. Like the one below.

$199.99 Undercut these other boys and move that product! happy.png

IpswichMatt,

I am pretty sure they are either Camel Bone or Water Buffalo bone.

thanks
