I only count them to fall asleep ;-)

@Walterbiensur, this thread is one of my favourites and Walter , you are so generous with your knowledge and photos - thank you. Those Chavet Regence pieces pictured in #338 are wonderful. I have a repro Regence only (and not Chavet) but it is often on display / here today on a chess box that my uncle kindly made for me and with Holger’s book. Proud to display all - a pity the chess set is a mere repro.

I think many of you recognize this set. This is a Lardy advertisement in Chess Life from June 1993.

But do you know this one?

This company was founded in 1971 and was established in the village next to Lardy, but also Chavet. The sets are size 3 and 6.

I just wanted to put a name, that of Lambert Jules on this set.

I hope Lardy wasn't just copying the sets of his neighbors to face global competition…

My dad used to tell my mom that there was never anything better than the original ;-)

Si si! The return of Shelter Hommes! This is just brilliant how you came to find out about this. Never knew about this.

TheOneCalledMichael

My grandma used to tell me there is only one like me, and the whole family sigh relief. I still don't know why to this day.

Walterbiensur

Just look the Mom Clock, you will see my Dad 😜🤣🤣🤣

Another excellent post - great to see the Lambert name and pieces. Along with the pieces I like the brand with bits distinctive ‘L’ and red sash. It would make a lovely poster to frame and display.

I bought several old directories of toy manufacturers in which appeared those of chess.

I had also found in a book on the history of toys, a reference to the Lambert turnery, but it was illustrated by a Lardy game.

Then I bought a bundle of books that came with the Lambert game, but I didn't know it yet. so by comparing it with the Lardy, everything became clearer...

Yes ! Like a poster from Toulouse Lautrec

I think you will find that the more recent Queen design changed to look like what is pictured with this set. A toy company named Aobo in France carried the more modern sets and I saw this queen design in the catalog.

Do you mean « Aobo - shop » ?

I don't know if it's always good to find new sources of information… but here is a second illustration of the Lambert games which dates from the 1982 catalog. According to the display of the telephone number, the advertisement may date 1963 at the earliest.

Finding this knight drawing like that is not going to make things easier for me… but if the drawing is really precise, I think I recognize a queen found in some boxes in the Netherlands, for example ;-).

I take this opportunity to insert a Lardy ad from the same 1982 catalog, as well as two or three others. Lardy specifies in his ad that he is the exclusive supplier of the XXI and XXII Olympic Chess Games. It therefore dates from after 1976.

In this little insert, I learn that Lardy also offers Brazil horn sets. Now I know where exactly comes from ;-)

Take a good look at Rachez's, top right, and you'll find a Chavet set.

Although all call themselves "manufacturer", they do not say exactly what they manufacture: is it only the box or only part of the games they (re)sell?

The search continues...

Hmm, that Lambert horsie does look familiar. Doing inventory on my Lard's sets is still on my to be nominated list to be on the to-do list.

You don't have catalogs where Longfield games are in it? I have many black Chavet's and most of them are in Longfield boxes so it can't be a coincidence.

Walterbiensur

I have nothing about Longfield, except like you, only one set, and black Chavet…

TheOneCalledMichael

I'm pretty sure Longfield games didn't make them, just a retailer. It's just I found many of them so I think it was quite a big retailer back then.

Walterbiensur

I think you are 100% right

Walterbiensur

I don't know if this is the type of set that was used in London during the WCC2000, but I think it comes very close.

There are so many variations with the queens… This set was bought in 1993 in France.

153/5 Antiqued, with his false twins

TheOneCalledMichael

Really nice! Here is another variation of the queen with more edgy cuts.
