Chess Empire Chavet B210 Repro different woods incoming!

I had a chat with them, just asking if they would also make them in golden rosewood / boxwood combo. They told me in fact, it's in the pipeline for next year! They will be available in sheesham, rosewood and ebony and padauk & lacquer finish. Sheesham will be the same price as the current version in antique boxwood, all the others will cost more.

I'm not sure yet when next year, but now I know they're coming I can take that off my chess bucket list happy.png

I think every thread should have a picture in it, so here it is happy.png

I highly doubt they'll offer sheesham and ebony at the same price. I've never seen that on any set, from any maker/shop.

ah yes that was my mistake, I misread from the chat. I just corrected that.

As a sidenote: Seeing as they are nearing production, if there is a custom Chavet order you had in mind, now is the time to order it. For me it's the Chavet rooks. In the B210 size (Chavet No.6) the rooks have straight vertical battlements on top as seen in the above posted pic. I prefer the Chavet No.5 rooks with the slightly flared out battlements on top. Oh, and no eyes holes on the knights. I don't trust them to carve the eye hole perfectly like Chavet. 1-2 mm off in placement and it looks wonky. Too small a hole and it looks beady-eyed. Not perfectly round and it looks crude. No thanks. Unless they can do this last detail perfectly, I'd keep them blind. I have a new modern Chavet-Jura set incoming from France. I'll see how it goes after I receive and inspect it. Thanks for the heads-up!

Ah right! It never cross my mind the possibility to have it customized. I never have played with the original, although they're from the same time when I played intensively when I was a kid. That was around 1984-1988. I played on national level (youth in the age till 20 category), but I cannot remember the official pieces we used to play with is Chavet design. So I cannot say I have certain preferences how they should look like. I can only tell from the pictures and the CE design looks pretty to me. I only have one requirement and that's a mat finish, lacquer is too shiny, too distracting.

But it couldn't hurt to study the original pictures more closely and compare it and perhaps have some details customized if needed. Thanks for the suggestion.

That's good news, Michael. Here's another Chavet set they offer which I really like. I hope it can come in boxwood/ebony. I'll go ask and report back.

Apart from the unjustified high price, the main problem with Chess Empire Chavet copy still remains the knight whose nose is thinner and the angle cut more obtuse. Obviously, copying Chavet’s knight is impossible.

Pawnerai, (or anyone) what is meant by No. 6, No.5, 4,7,......etc. I have seen this many times before. What sizes do the numbers correspond to ?

Interesting thoughts. I'm not exactly sure what you mean though. Here is my earlier photo of an original Chavet v CE reproduction. Can you point out the differences you're talking about.

TheOneCalledMichael

@audioq, yep looks close enough to me.

@spanishstallion: it's better to pay more for something that you really like then to buy cheaper somewhere else but you find it soso. That's what I'd call unjustfied price eventhough it's cheaper.

I saw this post from BeyondDuplication:

Thank you

TCE just put a video of their padauk version on FB.

on TCE facebook

I can't really make out of the padauk color, it's bit dull? Not sure if it's thick coated or just the video color grading.

Pawnerai

The video says available now, but I don't see it on the TCE website yet. Any info on the size and price? They also say it's available in many wood combinations. Any word on the other woods?

TheOneCalledMichael

This is the only thing they said during a chat '' we are introducing Chavet series in Ebony, Padauk, Sheesham and Ebonized or may be few in lacquer version". Nothing on the prices.

I’ve been talking to them too. I have some pics of the pieces in the new wood options being offered. I was told September……
Pawnerai

It'll be so nice to not hunt for months looking for a Chavet and then worry about leaners, cracks, chips, knots, and dings. And then a bidding war. Get that padauk order in fast. These will sell out in record time!

From what I've seen, TCE has the best Chavet repro. Can't wait to see how the finished sets look like and the prices.

Here they are - TCE’s B210 Chavet in five variations.  And there is a 10% discount code. https://www.thechessempire.com/henri-chavet-series-b210-1980-1990-reproduction-chess-pieces-3-625-king.html

The padouk looks really nice but I tend to love rosewood. I’m trying to be patient enough to wait and see how that options looks and prices out.
