There is ynotate on Android.
There is also a new device similar to the Monroi but half the price called PlyCounter which is also certified by the USCF for use.
I think everyone was already aware of that option, but thanks.
I am looking into a device to record moves for someone with cerebral palsy who cannot write. He also has some visual limitations. The one device I saw online required a stylus and was small and could be hard to see. Any recommendations? Thanks!
I am in a similar situation. I have a disease called Friedreich's Ataxia, and my fine co-ordination has deteriated so much that I can no longer write. I get dispensation from the ECF and do not have to write down my moves - I'd imagine USCF, FIDE & ECU would be the same. But I would really like to be able to record my moves to analyse my games. The monroi device looks good, but I think it would be too small for me and my co-ordination.
I did design a recording system that allowed you to mark the moves using a highlighter pen on larger space:
I had pictures of KQKBR the letters a-h and no's 1-8, the letter X, letters a-h and nos 1-8, a + symbol and a # symbol. I had these printed on two columns (white and black) and 5 rows, giving plenty of room for my poorly co-ordinated highliter dots. I printed out 20 pages with each row number 1-100. I'd fasten to clipboard and off I'd go to chess club.
So you want to put all this effort into getting an app that records moves and another one that disables all other apps, when you can buy a chess game book for $5 and get a pencil and record moves. Genius.
I'll assume that was aimed at me, as the last post before me was 15 months ago and yours was just 3 minutes after mine.
If it was an answer to my post, then perhaps learning to read might help?
Wasn't for you mate. I read your post and I'm sorry about your disease. I should have been more specific about who I aimed it to. Aimed at the person who created the forum.
It would be good for people who have that disease that makes you shake. Also, people who have the beginings of altzheimers. They recognize the board patterns, but they don't know what to do with a pen.
OK, no worries - sorry for my curt post.
RE OP: I do beleive the origional query was not so much about recording notation, but the ability to quickly transfer the recorded game to computer for analysis.
There is no way that the arbitrer could find if a tablet/pda/smartphone wasn't haked to appear running secure apps and instead its giving hints to the user. While i see there could be some benefit, the risk of introducing cheat methods is realy too high.
A much simplier solution would be having a webcam recording the match from each board (that nobody can touch) and afterward who want, can just get the movie and use it to take annotations.
How much cost a webcam anyway? Having a webcam per board its not an expensive solution. And how many compliants to the arbitrer could be solved just being able to watch what happened on the board?
If some "electronic" reconding would be popular in the future would be something like this. Not mentioning that also eboards can automatically take notes of the moves, And its much better than alloving player to use by themself e-devices. Pitty they still cost a fortune, and DGT have practicaly a monopoly in this field.
