Chessmaster seems to have disappeared from the market, at least on line. You can check Amazon or Ebay, but it just doesn't seem to be generally available as far as I can tell. I got version 10 on Ebay a while back.
Chessmaster GM Edition?

Hi Alex
Your are right; it seems not sold anymore.
I googled it and found the following chess.com thread: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/chessmaster-grandmaster-edition
Nimzoroy suggest the following site: http://www.shipdisc.net/products/Chessmaster%3A-Grandmaster-Edition-%252d%252d-3HD3O000FY4NAR7.html
They seem to have some in stock at very nice price. I don't know them so you are your own judge here.
For those who will say CM sucks and is out of date well maybe - I respect your opinion - please post you games showing how you have beaten it at full strenght. ;-)
I have also Fritz13 and use it for its analysis features to 'follow' some games, but when I want to play I tend to come back to CM. I can select either one character that suits my strenght (maybe i should say my weakness LOL) or my mood, or start one of the predefined tournaments and bang I have some game(s). I haven't found any similar way to play in Fritz who is always sending me a (rather quick) sentence of death.
But to me the main attaction of CM is the learning; openings hints & the included lessons from JWaitzkin and L Christiansen. They are very valuable (my opinion) and is the reason to keep or get CM10 or CM GM (same tutorials?).
** CM GM is a bit unstable on my (win7-64) machine - when I have a large advantage it sometimes hangs. I have to kill the process in the windows task manager and restart the game. But it does not bother me that much.

CM is fun. If only they would add a stronger engine and database capability, it would be perfect. It's unfortunate that Ubisoft has decided to discontinue the product.
Yes, I believe the guys who made CM GM should make a new one, with more characters, and eventually lower players. It is really fun compared to normal chess engines which are boring. Obviously I'm not Ivanov winning 10-0 against Houdini, and only when I'm lucky my games are longer than 25 moves against commercial engines.
For what is worth, I believe I bought my copy from Amazon, but it was at least 2 years ago.

I found my unused copy some years ago on local market with very low price, about 5€. Nowadays my computer has some problems running it, for example occasionally computer only moves when forced to do so (I must press the key 'force move') - which is quite annoying. CM has also freezed couple of times. But then good game database is there and also the puzzle solving is now and then quite fun, so that's why I'm gonna keep it installed. I also like the different 2D board options, altough the 3D is not for me.
Those lessons included were quite good at least from complete beginners point of view, the Chessmaster was practically my first tool when trying to learn chess and it really helped me to understand some of the basics (well in many ways, I am still learning them). I have also Fritz 11, but when practising at easiest levels in Fritz, the computer resigns too eagerly after losing material. That doesn't really help me to get some good practice for example finding the mate.
The different and especially stronger playing 'personalities' in CM GM edition are quite strong against casual players, but then again I as a novice managed once to 'stay alive' against 'Karpov' AI personality far more longer than would be realistic, so the engine definitely has it weaknesses. But that said, when playing/practising against computer I still tend to choose CM more often than Fritz...

Download the following FREE chess programs: Winboard and Arena.
Next download a bunch of FREE world-class chess engines inc. Houdini, Stockfish, Firebird, Rybka etc. Pls note that some free engines aren't the latest and greatest version, which are available for "not free" and which are totally irrelevant for anyone who is not a Master. Trust me.
I own Fritz 12 and would not have bought it without trying out this freeware instead, IF I had been aware of it (sigh)

I completely agree, Arena is a fantastic starting platform.
For me, Chessmaster GM edition's main attraction was Josh Waitzkin's academy. The personalities and varied playing strengths available are also very useful, but there are those occassions where it becomes obvious that you're playing a computer, regardless of the artificial personality strapped on top!

I'm in the same boat with the OP regarding sticker shock with Chessmaster GM. I have Chessmaster 10, and I was thinking of getting CM GM just to have the most recent version. But I'm not going to chase ridiculous prices, so maybe CM 10 isn't so bad.
I guess CM GM has more tutorials, but I've also heard rumors that it's a bit buggier. And CM 10 should be cheaper and easier to find.
@NimzoRoy, all these programs we're discussing are good, and each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. Free is great, but I think the CM tutorials are worth a reasonable price.
Also, if you're going to consider trying out Winboard, I'd prefer to get the latest version without 3rd party downloader software that tries to install extra toolbars. Here's Winboard 4.6.2 from the Winboard forum:

I did get a copy of Chessmaster GM a while back, and tried to put it on my Windows 7 machine. Chessmaster 10 is great for me, but the GM version simply would not install correctly despite various tries. I ended up giving up on it and sold my copy on Ebay.

Last year I downloaded Chessmaster XI or Grandmaster Edition directly from Ubisoft. You might try their site and see if it's still available there.
*edit* Looks like it's still available: http://chessmaster.us.ubi.com/xi/
When I bought it, it was $20. Not sure if the price is the same or not.
I would give Lucas Chess a try. Very nice interface with lots of weak engines. You have to defeat the weaker engines before the harder engines are unlocked. The weakeast engines start at Elo 158. It has tatics that you can try and solve, a beginners area... very extensive but very easy to use and explore.

Chessmaster is a great package - there's so much in it - and it's probably the best to play against it. A bargain if you can pick one up at amazon. It's fun but I'd use a different program for analyzing games, opening pgn files etc, such as fritz, chessbase, or shredder.

Here's and interesting match that the machine played:

Is there anywhere I can purchase a download for chessmaster GM edition? For some reason I can't find it anywhere nor on the site, I might just be blind, but I don't see download purchase anywhere.
