Chronos GX - set seconds??

Sort:

I have a Chronos II Touch (the long one), and I was thinking about picking up a GX to have something smaller and with the physical buttons. Looking at it though, I had a question - can you set the seconds, either when initially setting the time or when pausing the clock for adjustment? If not, would this not be an issue when using increments, because the increment needs to be added for Move 1? I'd be interested to hear what people who use this clock have to say about this capability and their experiences with the clock. Thanks!

On the Chronos GX, if you set it using one of the four "F" settings, you can set seconds (the time is set and displayed in minutes and seconds under these settings). However, the four "F" settings are only for single time controls with a maximum time of ninety-nine minutes and fifty-nine seconds (and you should avoid using this setting for some single time controls with an increment because the clock won't increment above ninety-nine minutes and fifty-nine seconds).

If you are setting the clock for a time control with more than one period or setting it for a single time control with at least 100 minutes, you have to use one of the four "TC' settings or four "TN" settings and you can't set seconds under these settings (these settings are set in hours and minutes only).

The Chronos GX does not automatically give the increment time for move one like it should (under both FIDE and US Chess rules, you get the increment for move one) and thus the increment time for move one needs to be added manually to the base time but you can't always set seconds on the base time on the Chronos GX. This is why I don't recommend the Chronos GX.

Okay, that exactly matches what I thought. Glad I have the long one, since it doesn't seem like those are available anymore...

So what is your recommendation for a clock then?

Thanks!!

If you are looking for a clock that is smaller length wise than the Chronos II and has buttons (instead of touch sensors or a lever), I would recommend the VTEK 300, which I consider to be the best chess clock.

@Micahsmith What would be your recommendations for a less expensive clock? And a budget clock?

In the middle price range, the DGT 3000, Chess Evolution Classic, Omcor GT960, and Leap KK9908 are all good options.

I think the Xflyee clock is the best budget clock, https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/xflyee-chess-clock

This page for complete and comprehensible instructions for programming the Chronos.  I  don't know why that the idiot inventor of this clock didn't provide the url instead of his ***t instructions that accompanied the unit.  (stars are my my own).

The link you provided is to the manual of the Chronos II (the longer Chronos). This thread is about the Chronos GX (the shorter Chronos).

On the contrary I've used that link quite successfully on my GX.

What parts of the manual for the Chronos II is relevant for the Chronos GX?

Pages 4 thru 7.   In each of the four preprogrammed modes, you can change them to whatever you desire, they're not restricted and so you can program them to have all the same settings if you like.

And I know, that whole document is a bit overwhelming and took me an hour or so to narrow down.

Also pages 49 thru 58; they're not listed in the Table of Contents.  But definitely download pp  4 thru 7.

Why not just use the Chronos GX manual?

Because I had a lot of difficulty understanding it and it seems no different from the manual accompanying the Chronos II.  Look I spent over two hours with the latter manual trying to set the C II clock and failed and in a fit of rage I hurled the C II clock against the pavement.  Grrrrrrrrr.

That manual is ***t and I am an author and have years experience in computer documentation and therefore have high standards when it comes to documentation.  (Stars are my own).  Time to move on as the URL that I provided solved my issue.

I realize this post is several months old but I wanted to add one correction.

It is possible on the Chronos GX to set a move one increment in seconds even with Tournament Controls (TC or TN).   Just set the base time in minutes, start and stop the clock and then long press the center button to adjust the time and it allows you to adjust all the time settings for hours, mins and seconds - so you can set it to base time plus the second increment for move 1.

It's an extra step but at least it's possible.
