Coloured Stickers on the DGT Smartboard pieces

I recently bought a DGT Smartboard and saw some coloured stickers at the bottom of my pieces. Can I remove them or do they serve a specific purpose how I should put them on the board?

You can safely remove them. They simply indicated which coils were inserted into the chess pieces. Those coils are what allows the supporting driver to distinguish the pieces from each other.

Alright, thank you for your answer. Does it matter how I put the pieces on the board?

As stated by xTDAWGx, the colors are indicative of an electronic tag. So pawns, while the same piece, may have different colored dots indicating a slightly different electronic signature. If you place the pieces on the board and a pawn is not showing, or the Pi is saying *'set pieces'  because it's ghosting due from interference from the adjacent pawn, switch these pawns out with one of of different color. If you don't have dots, just switch pawns until they all register.

Personally, I've never had a ghosting issue with any of my pieces (two-sets) so it may be an issue with some boards due to their electo-magnetic sensitivity.

* after assuring all the pieces are in their proper location on the chessboard. Addtionally, you need to rule out any other type of magnetic interference (e.g., monitor, metal).
