FWIW all members of our elementary school chess team are/were given a copy of Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess as their first chess book to learn from. I never really opened the book as my dad had dozens of chess books already.  I hear mostly positive comments though about the book.

Incredibly basic. It's basically a back rank mate book, with a lot on learning how the pieces move and what a pin is.

Take the name Bobby Fischer off the cover, and then see what anyone thinks of the content.  I think those positive impressions might be just a touch influenced by the name on the cover.

My Best Games of Chess 1908 - 1937 by Alekhine is a classic. You showed good sense by not purchasing his second volume of best games which is a pot boiler, quickly written by Alekhine (mostly blindfold) when he was in desperate need of money.

Winning Chess - How to See Three Moves Ahead is a great tactics primer.

Everything looks fine, except for Pawn Power.  Substitute Pawn Structure Chess by Andrew Soltis for that one, and you're looking good. Smile

That all looks like a fine collection. Maybe you could add "The art of attack in chess" by Vokovic. Or "My System" by Nimzowitsch. I'dd add in mastre versus grandmaster by Euwe and Meiden.

Nice collection.  One book I have that is a bit different that you might want to add to your collection is The Comprehensive Chess Course by Pelts/Alburt.  This book has many good examples and quizzes and is helpful for anyone at the beginning to intermediate stages of play and even on into class A.

how can anyone say bobby fischer teaches chess is a bad book? it is a very simple book with a limited but focused subject matter. as a book which starts by giving the basics of how the pieces move you can hardly expect it to be super in depth. the material it chooses to cover is dealt with very well and the difficulty progression, structure and simple style are perfect for getting beginners interested in looking deeper into chess.

I don't know (but it's happened).

Wow, so it's awful and a scam!

All of the old Boys Life magazines are now available online to read:

A few months ago I took the time to locate and read ALL of Fischer's old articles from that publication.
