Confessions of a chess set addict (A review, long, many photos)

I am a total chess addict too.  I love sets, clocks, bags, books, etc.  I even have a collection of chess hats from all over (including a chess.com hat!) and chess shirts, etc.  I have pegged sets, magnetic sets, plastic sets, wood sets, etc.  At one time I had a whole room dedicated to chess which is, unfortunately, now mostly in boxes.  The ones I love most are the real antique looking ones.

Here is a pic I took of one side of my chess room.

I own about 40 different chess sets.  You've inspired me to take a photo of all of them, and post them.

Is your show ready? I want to see your chess sets!!

Well if you have to be an addict I'd have to say being addicted to chess sets is a vast improvement over being addicted to alcohol, nicotine, crack, crank, coke etc. Well, maybe not a vast improvement...  (hic)

Great sets & photos, thanks for posting this!

It's funny but I own one nice set & bd sitting on a chess table custom-built for me by a wood-working friend but I only use it to play OTB, I much prefer analyzing my own games or reading chess books by using Chess Base or Fritz which does away with the necessity of always having to reset the pieces manually after going thru analysis lines and also all your analysis is instantly recorded as you move the pieces. And Fritz can be used to "infinitely analyze" games (not ones that i'm currently playing of course!) or positions as you play them out to check for analysis errors and typos.

the trouble is when you add chess to your alcohol, nicotene, crack, crank coke addictions and it takes over from all of them!

Hello all! It's been four years since I posted this article and I still get emails about it! I think when all is said and done, I ended up with 10 chess sets from HOC. The only issue I ever had was I dropped one of the 10 or 12" sets and it seemed to 'break' the glue holding the squares in place and the curved up slightly. I contacted them and they promptly replaced. Sadly, most of those sets I sold off or gave away as presents. I kept one 16" folding magnetic set and one 12" folding magnetic set. I then went and got into House Of Staunton sets. Talk about expensive! But I got them on ebay for a fraction of what they cost new from their website! I ended up with two beautiful wood sets and two great tournament plastic sets with HOS bags. Very sharp. Fortunately, I've kept those but now play almost exclusively online and for that matter, on my Android cell phone!!

Here's a link to an article I posted here on Chess.com after I got my first HOS chess set:

Deafdrummer - the HOC website is not laid out the best for finding things. To find the 'Globe' and the 'Magic Balls' sets scroll down on the left side of the page until you see the Product Size category box. Scroll down in that box and click on the 18" box. Both sets will be on that page. Note that these sets are not magnetic as advertised (which is why you could not find them in the magnetic section) but they will custom make them magnetic for you if you desire. You would need to contact them via email but they respond quickly.

It feels good I am not alone with the chess addiction. :-)

My fav is chessbazaar Dubrovnik in crimson 2.0! I can't tell how well the pieces are weighted and how stable they are. Fat rooks are sturdy and remarkable. The pawns have slightly bigger heads, which I like for quick grabbing and dumping while plating fast. Also, the Knights have more carving compared to earlier version. IMO the 2.0 version is a lot closer to the Noj set and CB prices are substantially less than the Noj sets.

Here are some pictures

& now I'm planning to buy their Romanian chess set. I'm in love with its uniquely styled knight & rook.
