Hi chess players,
I have just published a new release of ChessPdfBrowser.v1.30 with some bug fixing.

The main new feature of v1.30, is a new binary for creating a pdf from a pgn (pgn2pdf).
The classical binary (for extracting games and diagrams, among many other features) is available too.

Several resources exist for converting chess games from PDF format into a computer-readable chess format, typically PGN (Portable Game Notation).

Converting PDFs with chess content to PGN

Chessify: This online platform offers a PDF Scanner feature where you can upload your PDF file, read it like an e-book, and extract chessboard diagrams as PGN or FEN (Forsyth-Edwards Notation) files for analysis with chess engines. Note that the mobile app requires a subscription for this feature.

ChessPDFBrowser: This application allows you to extract games from PDF books, supporting algebraic and figurine algebraic notation. It also offers features to edit and save extracted games, connect to UCI chess engines for analysis, and even includes a pdf2pgn command-line tool for automation.

Online Converters: Some online tools are specifically designed to convert chess PDFs to PGNs. One such example is a tool available as a Hugging Face Space by shauryaDugar. You upload the PDF, specify the pages containing the game, and download the PGN file.

Manual Transcribing: If the PDF is image-based (not selectable text), you might need to manually transcribe the notation into a text editor and save it as a PGN file. If it contains diagrams, you can use a program like Fred Mellender's that captures a chessboard image and converts it to PGN or FEN.

Other Software: Some users have reported success using ebook management programs like Calibre to convert PDFs to other formats (., EPUB) and then copy-pasting the PGN text into chess editors for conversion to ChessBase format (CBH).

Key considerations

Type of Content: The ease of conversion depends on the content of your PDF. Pure text notation is easier to extract than scanned images of diagrams or handwritten scoresheets.

Quality of Source: Poor quality PDFs (., blurry images, incorrect formatting) may lead to less accurate conversions, especially for figurine notation or extracting game trees with complex variations.

Accuracy: Tools and apps use different methods for parsing the data, and results may vary in accuracy. Some might have difficulty with errors or omissions in the notation.

Free vs. Paid: While some tools offer free trials or basic functionality, more advanced features or higher usage limits might require a subscription.

It is recommended to try a few different options to determine which method best suits your specific needs and the format of your PDF files.
