DGT Chess Computer

Yes, I own one and can highly recommend it.
For reference I also own a DGT Rosewood Bluetooth Smart Board and a DGT Pi Chess computer, but honestly the Centaur sees more game-time.
It's fast to set up, the pieces are plastic but weighted, the quality is good on both the board as well as the pieces. The software is amazing in my not so humble opinion, four modes only (adds to the simplicity), Friendly - plays to your level and makes blunders, Challenge - Plays to your level but makes stronger moves, more difficult opponent, Expert - Plays at max ELO and Analysis - here the computer only watches you play and gives hints if you'd like it. The e-paper screen is marvelous and works in direct sunlight. If you don't mind that it's made out of plastic I'm sure that you'll be more than happy with this device, I know that I am.

Are you able to see the rings on the board when they are not illuminated? I had heard that there was an issue with this.

Yes, there's a faint line, but it "suits" the board and does not detract.

@TheGreyCount how often would you say you win on friendly and challenging mode? looking at getting too

I'd say I lose more than I win
Mostly as I fail to capitalize on "mistakes" and "blunders" - it is really good though, it feels like you are playing a human at about the same level as you are, in Challenging mode I have yet to win

I have read that the bottom is open. Has this presented any problems?
According to DGT this is to design, it makes the board extremely light, but it's not flexible and feels really strong. I also bought the DGT Centaur Bag so I put the chess board in this when I'm done playing.

Lol, it actually feels good winning against it, that's one of the best things
did you get new or original model, heard new one has less obvious rings?? do plastic pieces scrap on board when moving, heard new model will have wood pieces- anyone know thanks

I believe I have the original model, it's plastic on plastic so yes there's some "scrapping" nothing that I notice. There's no felt under the pieces. I've heard that DGT is working on a wooden version but that won't be out earliest next year (I don't know this of course, I'm only guessing), but as I said above, if you want a good chess opponent in a nice-looking package, look no further than the Centaur.
thx for info TheGreyCount
I have had a DGT centaur for three months and I am very satisfied with it.
On the new models (since begining of this year) we no longer see the ring on the board. It is very good.
The chessboard is very light but very solid. The parts are plastic but weighted and they are very pleasant to use.
The big plus for me is the rechargeable battery. No wire hanging around the floor and I can go play in the garden easily.
the chessboard is large and the pieces are good sizes
In fact it is a very pleasant check because very simple to use.
We turn it on, we play.
The level of play is more than enough for me and I suppose for most chess players.
In adaptive mode, the game is pleasant and the DGT does not make a big mistake as is the case with certain chess programs in order to simulate a human player.
In short, I love the DGT centaur and I do not regret my purchase.
And also I find it very beautiful

how quickly does the computer make its moves? some youtube videos it looked a bit slow but I think it was in expert mode with people running analysis

It depends, if you have no time limit it moves almost instantly, with time limits it acts more like a human and takes its time, depending on time-limit of course

Love how everyone (except me, now) continues to ignore sound67 and his search hints 😂🤣😄
I’ve had the Centaur for four months now. Build quality is excellent, pieces are fine (but there is a quick method for upgrading a wooden set for use with the board), and the engine is solid. If you’re a solid chess player, you’ll win more than you lose on friendly, but you’ll still have to work for it. Challenging will beat you most of the time. It forces you to play well to have a chance to win. Expert mode, forget about it. Just plan to learn from your mistakes. And that my friend, is what makes this a wonderful purchase. It will help you improve.
