DGT non Electronic Board & Beginners Guide!

I had same issues. At first I thought it was just imperfections in the wood. Only small but my OCD would not allow me to get over it so I know exactly what you mean.

Hi lotsoblots. What was the blemish? I sent my electronic DGT back for issues and although I love my non electronic board, the maple squares have a very strong grain which although I love it, it’s very different from the electronic version which I find strange, as I would have thought grains of certain woods are or should be consistent. I have pictures of you want to compare

The blemish was on the 13.75" Rechapados Ferrer board. It's not a huge mark but I saw it immediately and I'm picky enough that it pretty much ruined the board for me. The vendor did offer to replace it but I didn't want to deal with the hassle of returning from the US -> UK and didn't want to make them pay the shipping for the replacement.

Interestingly, I notice your light squares (and most I've seen) have the straight grain, but mine and @itrenix have the swirly pattern.

I think if I'd been given the choice, I would have gone for the straight grain to match the dark squares - But now it's here, I think it adds a nice woody feel to the board.

Also.... Please dear god.... Someone help me identify my pieces! 😂

Yeah I was surprised at the swirls as all the DGT boards I had in the past (electronic) were straight. It grew on me and now I prefer it.

I just heard back from my friend (not on this site) and unfortunately he wasn’t able to help. Sorry I tried.

Hope Sony can assist you soon.

Ah, thanks for asking!
I think I also prefer the swirls as well (a little more natural).

No problem. Yeah def. just seems weird that I have seen no electronic board with the swirls, but the non electronic board is apparently the same board?

I wonder if the swirls are harder to see on video, or if it’s just the wood they are currently using.

The board is this one - They make it for DGT and just a plain version for others to stock.

No I compared it with my DGT walnut electronic board. Def a different grain pattern. Maybe something todo with wood being used like you said. Perhaps something todo with the sensors or electronics inside?

I noticed that, too. Very interesting. My DGT non-electronic board is *also* straight grain (and thankfully free of blemishes). I love it. Here's a photo (taken from a lousy photographer, me):

Nice! Tough choice as to which I prefer - I think I like them both for different reasons.

So, can you educated folk take a look at this link and see if you think it’s the same as my pieces?

The only differences I can see are from the actual board. It’s 19” which would indicate the pieces aren’t 4”

@lotsobots. Very nice but some of your pieces are way of centre. My OCD would not allow that. In fact I often spend more time adjusting the positions of my pieces than planning my next move :)

LOL, I play with my kids on this board so I have to give up any sense of order and tidiness. grin.png

Hahah OK that’s fair enough haha

This is the board i ordered

I like librium mr.steve did me a favor and took this pic for me. What really bothers me is that DGT company uses placeholder pictures of the board but when u order one it looks different. This picture i posted the wood is more light brown while your picture above.... the wood has like black strains. It dosnt change the board but i wish they be more transparent with this. Some people might like different colors.

Hi @NamelessBeggar.

Yes I added some photos in a post and there are some here. You will see there are def 2x types. Straight and swirly.

Funny enough my DGT non-electronic board was from Librum games and was the swirly type but I love it so it’s all good.

I think the reason for this is that the wood which is used, is different each time.

It would be impossible (very time consuming) to photo every board that comes through the business.

I agree that the DGT boards are severely under represented online when it comes to actual photos (and not the stock DGT one).

The lighting also plays a massive part in how it looks.

Agreed!

Can't find an online retailer that sells the DGT non-electronic set. Any leads?

I have observed many of the wooden chess boards have uneven square size at the edges of the board. You can try to measure the width of the a- and h-file squares with a ruler and compare them with the width of the other squares. You might find that they are narrower by 1 to 3 mm! I own a couple of chessboards and notice this issue in most of them. Only a few had perfectly uniform squares. I wonder why it’s so difficult to make boards with uniform squares.

Besides the issue raised by NamelessBeggar above, another issue is the uniformity of the white squares which are made with Maple. Some of the boards I own have alternate shades of the maple White squares on every other file/rank, making the board ugly, in my opinion. Again I’m not sure why it’s so difficult to have boards with uniform colour shades of the white squares.
