Thanks, couldn't quite parse the elephants.

I've seen this design most often in bone but at least one person I was talking about swears up and down his is ivory. The board usually has mother of pearl inlay but idk since yours has metal pieces.

There's a wide range of designs with different sizes and levels of quality but always the same characters. It's generally sold as 20th century.

If you google for metal ones you can find it in metal (shown here without the board and still not quite parsing the elephants: ) But I hadn't seen metal ones till you asked about it and I looked.

The elephants can be tricky because sometimes they're the rook even in India but my Turkish set has them as Bishops and I think that's closer to what we have here.

Any idea what a set of this type would sell for? The copper pieces are somewhat tarnished. Should they be polished or left as is? 20th Century, post 1916, wouldn't fit the standard definition of "antique," but I've seen experts jump all over people for trying to "restore" an old piece, so I'm not sure what the best approach is.

There are no markings to indicate the origin, on either the pieces or on the board.

The board is not in pristine shape either.  There are bands to hold in the pieces but they're slack, and don't hold the pieces in place (which makes it almost impossible to close the box with the pieces inside).  I suppose I could pull them tight and knot the loops at the ends?

Sorry, I've been out of the chess collecting game for a long time and even then I haven't seen this kind of set sell. You might do some research see what it fetches on auction sites. A google search shows me mostly pages of people selling it or who have sold it so you have a starting point there. I wouldn't try to clean the pieces. The patina may have even been put there on purpose. As for the slack bands that is annoying. If your knot solution doesn't destroy anything it might be an idea. Good luck.

I would love to collect chess sets, but right now I only have a cheap folding set, and an amazing Isle of Lewis chess set, which I use daily.

I have a lot of chess sets, boards, clocks and books, and also some computers, the most interesting is the Novak Adversary in working condition.
One of my best chess sets is an early Biedermeier, but I have also love some of Coffehouse sets and some early Stauntons. I have a preference for wooden sets, but I have sets made of all kind of materials.
