Good morning,

I have a Checkmate Ltd. Chess set made of marble tile and stained hardwood edged in brass. Pieces are sculpted and cast in solid metal and plated in nickel silver and pure gold. Less than 1000 sets made. I have pictures and an authentication letter. The last one sold for $24,000 per the authentication letter. A fun fact from the manufacturer...Judge Judy has one. I purchased in 2023 for $17,000 from a gallery. It has never been played. I'm wanting $15, for it. Pics available if interested!!!

You're wanting $15 for it, or $15,000 for it?

Hello everyone! I’m into wood working and currently build chairs and other sorts of furniture. I’m about to be in Germany for 3 years so I’ve decided to take my wood working into smaller bits with making and selling chess boards. Anyone have specifics about what makes a really good chess board? Weighted, felt, not a super distracting board, etc. Thank you in advance!

FrancisVarney

Boards, or pieces? Boards aren't generally weighted or felted.

Since you’ve been a member only a few days you won’t be able to post pictures right away. However, we do love pictures here. Welcome to the ‘hood.

@CGhammer5353, good luck in Germany. It's a beautiful country, rich in history.

A lot of building a board is personal preference. My preference is a strong contrast between the dark and light squares making it easy for you to tell the layout of the battlefield. You'll encounter differences in measurements moving to Europe. The U.S. standard tournament square is 2-1/4", in Europe it's 55 mm. I also like a frame around the board to set things off. A nice big frame with wide aprons provides an easy place to put captured pieces or a clock. I also strongly prefer a solid backing to the checkerboard for support. I don't like to see the checkerboard on the backside, that just seems cheap to me. Just a personal preference. Take a look at the Falling Leaf Chess Etsy site for some ideas.

Good luck on your move.

i'd like to buy a chess set

With so many chess lovers here, I hope I can get some response to another question that just popped up:-
Which one do you prefer buying?
1. A new chess set (a fresh product but a higher price tag)
2. A used chess set (not a fresh but a lower price tag)
3. A new set with some imperfections (i have seen fresh products that aren't made exactly how they should be and sold at lower costs due to the same)
For me, I would love to have more of fresh products. They feel different but also add a few used ones (those with vintage feel or especially a good story).

Larry, that would be a great post for a new topic instead of burying it here in this for sale topic

Agree with you!!

Looking for comments again - last set was Ivory so we keep that. We were also given this one. This one looks like bone - any comments welcome. Looks porous with small pits. Hot pin smells like bone but I know that does not mean much, Many thanks for any comments.

I have an old Boris—one of the early computer chess games. Anyone know what that sells for these days?
