Does Anyone Recognize This Playing Set?

In 2008, I bought this set for tournament play.  I love it, and about the only downside to it is that the material (plastic) is extremely hard and doesn't have any give.  I like the hardness of the material, but I need to get a new set because of cracks and chips.

I simply can't remember who I bought it from or the name of the set.  Any help?  I'm sure someone on here has the exact same set.

That one seems like a Spassky Fischer type set. Thank you for the living proof that cracks appear in plastic chess pieces every now and then as well.

It's a Staunton

That is the "Ultimate" chessmen or possibly a knockoff, but they do look like the originals.   (picture from the distributor’s website)

That's American Chess Equipment's Ultimate Set. I have the set as well and it's one of my favorites. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued because the factory that manufactured it in Taiwan shut down and the mold to make the pieces disappeared. You can read more about it here http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/ultimate-chess-pieces.

If you can hold off for a few months, or so... There is a rumor that this set will be available again soon.  How long is soon?  Your guess is as good as mine.

here is the set available in wood if you're interested:

Similar sets are sold in México by Omcorchess.

The prices go from USD $14 (575 grams) to USD $21 (1000 grams).

This is true, you will find pictures of the set on their facebook page.

I think this might be a "knockoff" and may not be available in USA, at least not officially distributed here, but i could be wrong.  Pieces are a little different, most noticeable is the knight and rook...

Thanks for letting me know about the option.  I'm guessing 1000 grams is about what we call "triple weighted" in the States?  I'll have to figure this bit out.

However, I may hold out to see if that rumor comes true in the next month or two.

1000 grams works out to about 35 ounces... I would agree that is in the "triple weighted" range for plastic pieces.

If you have the original set, from your picture it looks like you do, your set should be closer to 1800 grams, as a comparison.

If you like that set, I would wait for the original to be available again... i think the "rumor" is pretty solid.  Not sure if a month or two is long enough... but who knows.

Okay.  Maybe I'll stick it out with the set that I have until then.  I've got a couple of tournaments coming up.  My set should hold up.

?

The whole resurgence of those pieces was funny.? The owner of Amchesseq bent over backwards to find the right factory and get the molds right.? The new factory did an amazing job with the pieces but came back with a bright yellow sample for the white pieces.? Pics of the samples were shared and everyone unanimously said the color was awful, but he said that it was just the camera (lol).? Flash forward a couple months and the pieces reached the U.S. shores in the same yellow color they were in the sample pics.? I pre-ordered 2 sets.? Pieces are far-and-away the best plastic set on the market but the yellow is godawful.

Yeah.  I love the pieces.  I think the matte black is awesome.  The yellow, on the other hand, is tolerable but not great.  Still, it's a wonderful set to play with and I'm glad he didn't go with regular white or ivory.  There are enough of those sets around. Here are some recent pics of my Ultimate set.

You know, I love the set and don’t even mind the neon butter color but I would have loved it more in an ivory white. Of course I’m sure the cream color intended would be perfect. If they ever have any different colors I’ll pick up another set just because they truly are amazing pieces.

Btw that Chess playing area looks amazing. I wish we had things like that around here.

It's the Etobicoke Chess Club.  It's kind of a chess club without a home but I like it a lot.  They started off in a coffee shop with tables that were small enough that more than one chess clock fell off the tables.  Because they run on a donation only basis (they want to keep things as accessible to everyone as possible), potential venues were limited.  Fortunately, they found this old mall with these wide hallways and these areas of tables and chairs in the middle.  It's a little bit out of the way for me but it's fun.  The guys who run the club are very passionate about making the club a fun experience for all.  They get a decent crowd and occasionally they manage to convince passersby to join in on the fun.
