Does such an analysis board exist?

Hi,

I am looking for a convenient analysis board.  Ideally, this board should be smaller than a full-size board, made out of leather, vinyl or any other flexible material, ideally the board and pieces should be magnetized, the pieces should look conventional, they should be weighted, and the board color should be a standard while and green/blue/black.  Lastly, the board must have visible letter/number coordinates.

The closests thing to the above I could find so far is this board.  Main regert: the board and pieces are not magnetized (I would also have preferred leather over vinyl, but that is not essential)

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

Your best bet might be to find a suitable set of men and then have some local leathermaker tool a leather board to your specifications, appropriate for your pieces.

Magnets don't seem to fit in with a leather board that rolls up.

I was looking at that link you posted and on the very same page was a link to this set which I think is exactly what you described... It's mouse pad type board with "lightweight pieces with small magnets" -- (it doesn't actually say if the board is magnetic though.)

Yes, you are correct.  I had seen this one too, and I should have mentioned that in my initial post.  The thing is that the size of this one (8"75) seems awefully small.  Has anybody tried playing on such a small board?

But yes, the exact same board in, say 14"-15" would be perfect!

All it would take is a thin layer of metal.  I have seen a board made in Korea which had that but, alas, it did not have coordinates.  As for the magnets, they should be in the pieces, not in the board.

I had a leather board made to my specs which came off brilliantly. It was not a thin piece of leather though, not suitable for rolling up. Two pieces actually.

A very nice analysis board for my purposes.

how much did you pay for it all?

goldendog

Just $20 for the board, custom job with 1.5" squares, green and natural.

I made a wooden frame for it and glued it on. A two piece board.

Here is a pic before I finished the teak. I made the pieces you see but I have a standard design (dreuke analysis) set that I use with the set almost always.

scroll down to see them all.  I have both the pocket wallet one, and the TravelMate, which I love.  The pieces are magnetic and the board is very sturdy and folds up.  The pieces are wood.  Jeremy Silman did a review of it:

Some time ago I gave a glowing review to the CHESSMATE CHESS WALLET (click HERE to see that review). I’m still very high on that product, and still feel it’s the perfect gift for the chess maniac in your life (if that’s you, then indulge!).
Since that time CHESSMATE.com has come out with various new items (including the CHESSMATE ULTRA-WALLET … ah, a new thing to lust for!), but the object of this particular review is something that the Fortune Small Business online Magazine (in their March 2008 issue) spoke highly of, mentioning that this portable chess set fits comfortably on an airline tray table so you can nerd away the endless hours basking in your favorite pastime.

This handmade magnetic travel chess set features a 9.5” square magnetic folding board that firmly grips the pieces, has a clear matte scratch-resistant coating, and a marbled-foil inlaid border. The Staunton style chessmen are made of boxwood and dark Indian rosewood, and everything fits comfortably inside an imitation leather zipper pouch.

I used this set during my last trip to Japan and found it suitable not only for flight use, but also as an analysis/master game set while ensconced in my Kanazawa Ryokan – yes, it’s small enough to use on a plane or train, but large enough to use when going over openings or games in a hotel room.

If you like to take a chess set wherever you go, this will suit all your needs. And if you’re into portable sets, you won’t find a better one anywhere.

And, at the risk of sounding like a nudge, DO check out the chess wallet!

Very nice indeed, but no coordinates on the board. and that, for me, is a *must*
