Drueke Plastic Chess Set (unknown model#)

Sort:
springerarchie

Several decades ago, I purchased a Drueke plastic chess set (without extra Queens). I have been reading forums in the last few years about the various models and styles such as the 35(H), 36(H), 32, and 38, and am unsure which set I own. I don't think that it's either 35 or 36 as the base and the Queen's crown are different on those than the one I have. Any information would be appreciated. Photos are included.

No help

But that is really nice!

This is one of the last plastic sets imported by Carrom after they bought Drueke. The actual model number was 832.97, and was identical in size to the rosewood set they sold under model number 820.40.

These sets were not terribly popular, for whatever reason, and Carrom stopped importing them in the late 90’s.

Carrom stopped everything chess-related as you know. What a BLUNDER. 😱

Thank goodness you are still here. I saw you on a years old thread.
What the do you think this is? Very Drueke'ish but the seller insisted they got it in England.

Hi Bunky777,

In American Made Toys Trade-Book – Toy Manufacturers of the U.S.A., 1918 , there is an advertisement by Drueke with similar knight heads (see the link above from Antique Toy Collectors of America):

Below, I have a similar set along with an advertisement from a 1920s Tinker Toys catalog featuring illustrations of matching pieces. The king is less than 3 inches high.

is this wood druke a weighted set?

Hi,

Yes, my pieces are weighted.

pontpierre

is the english set better than the american or vice versa? what is the difference?

I think they are from the same maker. As to which one is better, hmm, that's something I can't answer. On my set, the weights of a few pieces are loose. The height of my king is under 3 inches.

The knights are very similar to the Horn D-3.

GrandPatzerDave

...and almost an exact match to this D-2 I found on eBay.

pontpierre

they are very similar. did horn make pieces for druek or vice versa?

BobbyStaunton

The knight's mane reminds me of certain small cakes...

I'm sure there's someone (almost anyone, hahaha!) who would know better than I but I seem to recall that Horn in their time made sets for a number of companies but I don't remember Drueke being among them.

(Apologies to @springerarchie for thoroughly hijacking his thread.)

Since the hijack is already on...
I've always wanted to put glue in a syringe and inject through the felt. Never tried it though.
What I do is put a movie on and knife off half the felt and knife a little nub of the lead (3x) into the wood like a self nail and glue it too, then glue the felt back and tension it.
I just finished these mid 60's Chavet 4.5" baby rattles...

I believe they were both located in Grand Rapids, MI. I always thought they each made their own sets but being so close to each other who knows?

Very close but the Horn set I just saw looks to be a better match.
I wanted it to be a Drueke, but now I have to learn a whole new line of history of the Horn Sets and I like that too.
Funny enough this is the second set this week I thought other and someone pointed to Horn as the solution. It turned out to be a Horn Bone set.

Bullseye, way closer match. I assumed Drueke but after looking at your knight it's spot on'ish.
I've never looked at their knight that closely. Great Pic. Weird fact... this is the second Horn Set I mistook for another company. The other was their bone set that I thought was German Uhlig.

pontpierre

what size is your horn? does the one on the left have pads like on bobbys and yours
