Finally! Please help identify these pieces

Hi guys,

after selling the one chavet set I bought in 2021, I finally got the chance to acquire another set.

I got it from one of the chess clubs in Freiburg, Germany where I live, after a rapid tournament they hosted today. I already got into contact in June and asked, whether they would sell one set to me. I already knew they had some of the probably more rare variations, since one could tell by looking at some of their pictures that those pieces were bigger than the usual 8,3cm sets. They where very kind and and I am grateful to them.

It would be great if you could - again - help identify the specific variation of the Chavet set, since I am absolutely sure it is one, eventhough it is missing the original box. This also is due to the fact, that Freiburg is located just a few kilometres from the French border and that there has always been a strong exchange between the two countries in this area.

The king measures 9,3 cm and has a base diameter of 3,5-3,6 cm. They are in pretty good condition (I would even go so far to call it very good, especially considering how hard it seems to get your hands at a reasonably priced set) eventhough the black king has a lean.

I am planning to keep them, also due to the fact that I got them very cheap and therefore wouldn’t think it would be right to make a profit out of them. But what is the estimated value?

Thanks!

It looks like a set that was made in Germany in the 90's. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1395755183/chess-set-made-in-germany-90s-vintage-in

I think this looks closer to my standard German Knight set.

Genuine Chavet for sure! Beautiful set, congratulations with your purchase. Size 6's are hard to come by and I would guesstimate that yours would be from the late eighties or early nineties. There are a couple of very knowledgable people on Chavet here, so hopefully they'd be able to provide you with more info. Have a look in the Chavet N°8 thread and you'll have loads of reference material to plow through and compare.

If this is really 93mm then it is the B210. The king’s thin cross, queen’s flat crown top, button top bishop, typical late 80s/90s Chavet knights, and rook crenelations says it all. Here is mine. You are lucky to get one. These are hard to come by.

As far as value, I have seen one go for $1,500 on eBay back in 2020 I think it was. It belonged to @Audioq. This year there have been 3 or 4 that have sold. The most expensive was $700 USD. It was mint with no leaners, no cracks, etc. The others were around $500. There was one that sold for under $200. The seller thought it was a modern day Chavet size 6 and sold it for what other Chavets were going for. He/she did not know it was a vintage B210.

Then my guess was right, thank you both! I was so thrilled and in disbelieve, when I saw a picture of one open club tournament from a few years ago where they played with at least 16 of the exact same set! Because I had the N5 at the time, I was pretty sure they were using N6s. And yesterday the same. If they knew what they are using, in two weeks for blitz (3+2) even...

16 of the same set as you bought? Wow! That’s cool!

Yes, the exact same...absolutley! They told me the other sets were in better condition, but honestley, I couldn´t tell a difference while playing.

Man that’s cool. You should buy a set or two more. The vintage size 6 is hard to get. There will always be someone who wants one.

I would love to, but they use the other sets for their first and second team during the team matches (both consist of 8 players). Maybe in the future, I get the chance to get some more, but for the moment, I am absolutely happy and am already using the set to prepare for match day tomorrow.

There is a special interest group on Facebook for identifying chess sets. One of the experts even wrote a whole book on the subject. Try your inquiry there, too.

Wonderful - congratulations and enjoy the set.

I think I'm not wrong in saying that this game dates from around 90-95 (Chavet Chess). The queen is significantly different from the one used in 1990, the model of which dates from the mid-80s (Henri Chavet).

But no matter: I love them too! Very nice set - well done!

So left 1Q
- 1970
Between 2Q
-1980
To the right 2Q
- 1990

The dates of manufacture do not always correspond to the dates of the competitions during which the sets were used.

And here a size 5 set, with a queen practically identical to the one in this thread - early 1990 ;-)

Yours is typically from the same era as the 1990 WCC - manufactured in the 80s.

When a size 6 game appears with a box and the "Henri Chavet" logo, it is almost certain that it is the famous one used in 1990. In 1990 Henri Chavet became Chavet Chess and the sets were slightly modified - as with the queen.

Unfortunately, not all Chavet boxes have a logo and before 1980, the logo did not exist.
