Thanks rcmacmillan -
After you said Spain I was sitting here thinking I'd seen these somewhere. Turns out there is a set of this style on etsy for sale right now.
These seem to be a nicer wood and older... Here's what the seller has to say, translated from Spanish:
Old Spanish Casino chess with its original box, is a chess of the years 40/50 with the aged pieces that give it a very decorative Vintage tone. A piece of fruit wood probably pear. It is a big model of competition very used in the casinos of the towns of the years 40 in Spain.
Curiosity of the smallest ladies.
Measurements: King 95mm

note: I have no affiliation with seller.
They aren't fancy at all. I got them for 10 bucks though so you can't argue w that for weighted, wooden pieces. The knights look drunk
.
But when I get home tonight I'm going to sand the rough spots, wash, clean them and wax them, and re-felt the bottoms.
In the meantime...
Can anyone tell me age? make? what's this style of knight called?
AND
I think I hate the reddish stain the black pieces have now. Any recommendations on how to stain these darker? Can you DIY "ebonize" pieces? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
