I have been in and out of chess for at least 60 years and finally took the plunge for a nice set and board.

Starting with the board....

This is a custom Colorado Woodworker (Brad Borkowski) board.  It was easy to work with Brad (No personal connection).  The board is a 2-1/2" square Zebrawood and Curly Maple with a Spalted Maple Border.

First the packaging.  A wood frame and custom foam corners!  The boy knows how to get it here in good condition!

Un-packaged Board

Top Down View note the different edge detail due to spalted maple border

Now a look at the main custom feature:

I requested a magnet retention for the central playing surface.  The board can be displayed or used with or without the border!

This is the first one Brad has made and it works well.  20" board for smaller tables and 23-3/8" for larger tables.

Now the chess pieces.  This is the House of Staunton Steiner Series Luxury 5" Burgundy and Natural Lacquered set (With extra Queens).

This is set number 2.  Do not be afraid to choose this set.  I actually preferred the burgundy to the ebony.  The bonus is saving a number of $$$

- White Army -

- Burgundy Army - In person they are just a little more red than they look on "My" screen.  It is the internet you MMV.

- White Queen Side - The Steiner designed knight is the reason that I obtained this set.  You can see the boxwood grain through the finish.

- White King Side -

- Burgundy Queen Side -

- Burgundy King Side -

I would not hesitate to recommend this as a club sized set for anyone who wants a beautiful showy set that can also play a good game.

The Piatigorsky Cup tournaments of 1963 and 1966, as well as and the 1961 Fischer-Reshevsky match used the Herman Steiner Master Chess Set in this size!

This set comes in a two tiered locking case with individual pockets for each piece with a removable tray for one color.  Packaging from HOS was superb with pieces well padded in the case, the case in a box and then an outer box around it all.

Nice. I bought one of his boards a couple of years ago, no border, it’s held up well. Beautiful set.

Follow-up post regarding Coffin/Case and Piece Weights

The case is a black leatherette briefcase style with two latches.  Dimensions are 17" x 15" x 5" (Width x Depth x Height).  Case is fairly heavy and is probably made from MDF.

Velvet covered pockets cut specifically for the Steiner set are positioned in two tiers with the upper tier removable.

Exterior - Black Leatherette Case

Upper layer with Natural Pieces - Conformal pocket are cut for the specific Steiner Pieces including dual queens.

Tabs on sides make lift out of the upper layer easy.....

The lower level with Maroon Pieces

Note that there is space above each tier that allows the pieces to move out of the pockets when the case is lifted by the handle.  I will be obtaining two pieces of foam that will hold the pieces when the case is closed.  I personally do not intend to transport the pieces on a regular basis, but it is good to be prepared.

The pieces were packed with a thick layer of white packing foam folded to keep the pieces in their pockets.  Knights were separately wrapped in white packing foam and all pieces had individual plastic bags.
